After reading some negative comments from members on this board about the Catena I was not expecting too much.
I was wrong!!!

Dark ruby with aromas of sweet cherries, plums, and raspberries with graphite, vanilla, chocolate, spices and a hint of licorice. Full-bodied, round tannins, great balance, with flavours of cream, smoke and fruits. A medium finish of sweet fruits.

If I remember correctly James Molesworth rated it a 90. I believe he was right.
Maybe bottle shock was the cause for some.
Bman, if you're reading this, you should go buy another one, if you don't already have some and try it again. You won't be disappointed.

IMO Catena's Malbec tastes almost the same year in and year out. The 2000, 2002 and 2003 are very close in flavour profile anyways.

Catena's Malbec is starting to bore me unfortunately as I bought waayyyy too many bottles of the 2000/2001/2002. Eek

I have a few bottles of 2000/2001 and 2002 Catena Alta Malbec that I am looking forward to opening soon though. Smile
Baird,

You might want to hold off on the 2002 Catena Alta for a bit. Last time I tasted it (the beginning of the year) I remember thinking it needed another couple of years. The 2000 should be drinking great now and the 2001 should be coming together nicely but haven't had that one since I tasted it at the winery 2 years ago and remember thinking it needed 3-5 years. It was tasted right out of the bottle and should have been decanted.

I'll look forward to reading your tasting notes.
