My neighbor (who by the way knows justaskosh) made too much Broccoli Cheese Rice Casserole yesterday and asked me if I wanted some.  She's a great cook, so of course I grudgingly agreed to take some.  I wasn't expecting much, but it was actually quite savory and delicious.  That's savoury for you Canuks and Brits out there.  Yes bman, I'm talking to you...

For those of you with more adventurous palates, I'd recommend some heat in the mix.  Jalapeños, chili flakes etc.  It's definitely kid safe, and perfectly good as-is.  Next time I make it, I'm going to add some grilled chicken or pulled pork.

This angel of a neighbor has given me tubs of Chili, Split Pea Soup and Turkey Rice soup over the past week or so.  God Bless America.

We had a Vacqueyras that night.  Last night chili over pasta.  Sort of a play on Cincy chili

Interesting pairing.  I've had BB with Cotes du Rhone once or twice, but otherwise have always paired it with PN.  And anyone who knows me who read the last sentence is likely snickering.

re: chili and pasta, there was a familiar sequence in my college dorm cafeteria.  One day early in the week, they'd make hamburgers.  The next day, there'd be chili on the menu.  In a day or two...chili mac.  They weren't fooling anyone.

Oh!  And regarding Cincinnati Chili, as people with a connection to the DC area, you all may remember the Hard Times Cafe.

The original location was in a minuscule shopping center next to my old neighborhood in Rockville, MD.  A 10 minute joint smoking walk from my front door.  This shopping center had room for 3-4 stores, max.  They were the first restaurant to offer Cincy Chili in the DC area. They never really got it right, and I haven't had their chili in a couple of decades.  Amazingly, they're still there.

They do make a ridiculously great cheeseburger. Top 10 in my experience.  The fries are also first rate.  Try 'em next time you're in the area.  And try a small bowl of their Cincy Chili.  It's actually pretty good, if a little bit too cinnamony.

Where they go wrong is in the pasta and other ingredients.  Never had smellier chopped onions in my life.
