Had this wine last night at Green Gables Inn with Grilled Lamb. This bottle was compliments of seek1 from the 6/15 grab bag. Wine was opened for 90 min prior to tasting.

Dark garnet color with slight bricking to the edges. Very powerful nose of black cherry and spice. This wine on the palate was more reserved than on the nose. Flavor profile of blackberries, briar, and some oak are nicely woven. The finish was moderate in length. Tannins were in check as this wine is drinking very well right now. jb Rating 89.

I'm not sure what the price of this wine is, but since the grab bag was supposed to be $25 or less, I think this is a good QPR and would buy it if one could find it.

Dave,
You have the next wine in the heirarchy of Rioja. It starts at
Joven (young fresh wines really never oak aged)
Crianza (a year in oak then bottled)
Riserva (A year in oak and 1 yr in bottle)
Riserva Especial (2 yrs in oak and 1yr in Bottle)
Gran Riserva Especial (3yrs in oak and 2yrs in bottle)
These are all guigelines and the Bodegas can age these wines for much longer then the above limits. The '95 Riserva Especial is a great bottle, you can drink it now or over the next 5-8 years easily.
