I had a chance to visit Tofanelli for a tasting appointment a little over a year ago. Vince Tofanelli rents cellar space at Joseph Cellars just south of Calistoga, and that is where he hosted our tasting group. He poured us a Grenache, a Zinfandel and this Charbono which for me was the highlight - so I picked up a bottle and cellared it until popping tonight.
Visually very reminiscent of a Petite Sirah, with a nearly opaque purple hue. Nose is rather PS-like as well with blackberry, violet & hint of vanilla extract. The tannins are fine-grained bu supportive, acidity rather low. I'd drink now or in the next 3 years while the body and fruit weight are still strong. Good density carries through the finish. 91pts.
Other than Tofanelli himself, Turley is the only other winery that bottles a Charbono from this vineyard to my knowledge. I've never had the Turley version so I can't compare it directly, but I would imagine I would like it as well.
