2010 Chapoutier Bila-Haut occultem lapidem

Dark wine with understated notes of barnyard and ripe raspberries and dark cherries and hints of leather. Palate is dense, full bodied with a tannic bite but which is well integrated and harmonious on the long cherry finish. Solid 92 points maybe higher with some age. Very good value at 26$.

Agree with your notes, Mimikos, althought there is a fair amount of peppery Syrah as well in the mix. Chapoutier did well in 2010, even his base cuvee is great, and at a bargain basement price.

Occultum , like many Rhones, has a interesting flavour profile when young but i suspect it will round off in 2-3 years, not much beyond that. Yes, Steve, that Parker score is misguided.

This could probably use at least a year, up to maybe 3-4 although it's drinking just fine for me right now. It was a bit tight out of the bottle but opened up quite a bit with some air. I gave it 91 points. 95-97 is a bit much...

I have had a few vintages of this wine, enjoyed them very much. I think the '10 will be great in 2-3 years and easily hold double that.

I have seen this lumped into the Rhone category, but this is a Cotes du Roussillon, you can almost see Spain from the vineyards.

In my book a cotes-du-roussillon is from the Languedoc-Roussillon region.

Whatever it is, it's an excellent wine at a very easy price.

Popped another one to see how it's been evolving.

Still a bit dense and subdued. Opened up after maybe 30 minutes to black cherry and a bit of anise. Was hoping for more garrigue notes but it's faint. Some 5-spice notes with a ton of texture on the palate. Hold for 1-2 years I think.
