Upon opening, explosive grapey nose with vanilla, mocha and a bit of barnyard funk? Swirled but did not taste. After my shower, nose is more sedate with hints of dark fruit but (pleasant) barnyard persists. Color is deep, dark crimson - no bricking. Cork was clean and youthful. This wine has the most charmingly sweet cherry on the attack. Noticeable oak and alcohol mid-palate, but not particularly distracting. Impeccable balance and remarkable length to the pure cassis and black cherry fruit. Tannin is detectable, but I wouldn't want any less. It lengthens the finish. I've had deeper and more complex 2006 Cali cab, and the alcohol content leaves a bit of heat on the finish, but I am loving this wine. 93 points now. I think I may have caught it at its peak, but for those who like silk, it will smoothen for another year or two.

2006 Ramey Cabernet Sauvignon Larkmead Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley (3/3/2018)
Popped and poured before the entrees arrived. Still has a youthful appearance with a dark inky crimson/purplish hue. Dark berry fruit, cassis, tapenade and spice aromas. Medium tannins. Flavors of black fruit, plum, spice and sandalwood, with a hint of pepper in the finish. Excellent. Will hold my remaining two bottles for a couple of years yet as I think there will be some improvement. (92-93 pts.)
