2003 Foxen Syrah Williamson-Doré - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley (11/11/2006)
WIML90,NOWA,WS92

Tasted November 11, 2006 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Decidedly new world nose of rich blueberries with a dash of white pepper and some crushed mixed berries. Flavors of chocolate covered cherries, blueberries and maybe some black berries. Light to medium acidity, medium tannins and medium bodied. Drink over the short term, perhaps 2-3 more years. (90 pts.)

Have not had a Foxen Syrah in quite some time, so I thought I would give this a whirl while watching the USC-UCLA basketball game. Score is tied, so perhaps I'm a bit distracted. Opened and served in a Riedel Vinum Syrah stem. Nose of blueberries, plum preserves, roasted meats, and marshmallow cream. More blueberries, plum, and meat on the palate, accented by spice and pink peppercorns on the finish. Texturally, this is a creamy wine, with good acidity and firm tannins. While drinking quite well now, I think it will show even better with some more time in the cellar. A nice effort, and go Trojans! 91+ points. (91 pts.)
