Nice haul Stealthman-18 Wykoff? Wow, and I thought I bought a lot!
Anyway, I also have restraint when it comes to the '02 (and '01) SVD's. None of them will see the inside of my mouth for a loooong time.
Also, I must concur with the '02 NV drinking well right now. We tried one last week and was pleasantly surprised. It didn't even need hours of air, I decanted it for less than an hour.
Of course, the '01 NV is far from being enjoyable right now (unless you open it the day before you want to drink it!).
latour67,

Good question. I don't know your palate well enough, so I can't say if Wykoff is as desirable to you as other folks, in particular stealthman. Wink

What I can tell you is that ever since the first time I tasted the 2002 Neal Cabs from the barrels, Wykoff has been my favorite. The two sets of formal barrel notes I took for 2002 can be found here and here, in case you missed it.

Validated by Gove just two seconds ago, Wykoff and surprisingly One Lane Bridge would be the two SVDs to open now if anyone want to try any of the six in the set.

Thanks for those links, which clearly explained the SDV barrel samples. Since barrels samples seem most always to be better than the first bottles, have you had the Wykoff from the bottle? Also, which one is better to open now, the 2001 or 2002? (I have a wine dinner to attend this Friday and I was thinking of taking a Neal?
latour67,

I've had the 2002 SVDs from the bottle, no formal notes taken.

First time I had all six bottling was in late April at the Red Carpet tasting in LA. The wine was opened maybe couple of hours before the tasting, not decanted. That particular night the Wykoff and Second Chance were the crowd favorites.

Another time when I tasted all six bottling in one seating were just a few weeks after that in mid-May. The tasting dinner was held here at the winery for a group of retailers from NY. The wine were opened, decanted and pour back in the bottle with the cork 24 hours before the dinner. On that particular night, there was not a clear cut favorite among the six, just whatever each individual's palate happen to prefer.

I just had a 2001 Second Chance a couple weeks back, tight, so stick with something from 2002 for the time being.

2002 Wykoff should be a good bet to show well, provided the wine dinner you are attending is not full of old world crowd.

Okay its settled, Friday night I will take the 2002 Wykoff! I'll decant it for four hours and pour it back into the bottle, recork it and take it to the dinner.

As for the "Old World Crowd", I'm one, but I also enjoy the "New World Wines" and their richness and lushness. So, I will pour a 1983 Pichon Lalande first, then ambush the crowd (7) with the 2002 Wykoff. It should be fun. It will be the "Earthiness and age of Bordeaux" vs. the "Fruit and youth of California". I'll post the results! Thanks for the info.
