Ben Giliberti, one of the wine reviewers for the Washington Post, wrote about the joint effort between Lafite Rothschild and the Nicolas Catena family. Their first effort is the 2000 Caro, a blend of 67% Cab and 33% Malbec. This wine was the subject ot an October 25th article here at WS online but there were no tasting notes yet. I am attempting to get some to try (and it would be nice to have some of the first year if it turns out to be as great as he said) but wonder if anyone has been able to try some yet. I would love to get more than one opinion before I spend the money to get it.

When in doubt, open another bottle.

Well, it turns out it is allocated, so I am lucky that I can get any at all. I have ordered half a case (it is right at my price cut-off point) and will be able to pick it up tomarrow.

To quote Ben:

Like a precocious little Mozart, a super-baby like this might be enough to scare the parents. Though undoubtedly proud, both parents have some explaining to do. Lafite Rothschild sells for $175 a bottle. Bodega Catena's top wine, called Zapata, is priced at $90. Caro is a mere $39, chump change in the rarefied world of elite wines nowadays. Based solely on quality, without regard to price, choosing among them would be a close call for me. When price is factored in, it's a no-brainer. Caro is the blowout winner

I hope he is right, if not, I'm only out about $250, or one great meal for me and the wife at a nice restaurant. I'll let you know, though it seems to be a crime to open it for a few years at least.

When in doubt, open another bottle.

So I saw in the paper. I managed to get half a case at $40. I tasted a sip at Schneiders but itwas as I had just come in from the cold and it was in a plastic cup. It wasn't bad, but I didn't have enough under the right conditions to make a judgement. It seemed to be quite good under the conditions. I see that WS gave it 90 pts.

When in doubt, open another bottle.
This was the debut vintage of the joint venture between Bodegas Catena and Domains Barons de Rotschild. One third malbec, two thirds cabernet sauvignon blend. Medium purple color. Soft aroma of ink and wet earth. Understated, medium bodied (13.5% abv) and elegant. Not made in a blockbuster style but rather stern, with plums, dark fruit, cedar and a touch of vanilla. Like a nice Left Bank red. Tannins are very soft. Medium acidity. Very pleasant and at peak. Medium finish. Good wine.
