Stef picked this one out before it was reviewed, based only on being a Gigondas and having a pretty label. We had the first bottle about 6 months ago, and went back and got 4 more, this was the first of those additional four.

A very strong nose. Stef insisted "burning brakes", I said "tar, smoke, it's not phenol at all to me?" but she stuck with "burning brakes". I'd call it smoke with red fruit.

A subtle wine, medium bodied, with a lush red fruit taste, more smoke and earth. Seems to suggest young Grenache and Syrah. I nice finish, with lingering fruit. My call is it will probably be better young than old, now -2005 (88-89).

1999 Caves des Papes Gigondas Reserve des Fustiers -- from what I understand to be a large co-op, a delicious blend of Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvedre, and at C$30 priced very well; brick red in colour; nice nose of sweet ripe plums with a lavender/floral element; lots of plum and berry fruit with hints of black pepper and basil, and good acidity; medium-long finish, with some fine tannins outlasted by the fruit. Very tasty on its own, and food-friendly as well. App. 90-91 pts.
