With all the hoopla over the '01 Valdicavas, I couldn't resist pulling a '97 for my first try. Dark, youthful, ruby color. Nose of blackberry, licorice, and smoke, with a floral component late in the aeration process. Palate has elegant dark fruits, with hints of licorice and a cool, refreshing band of something un-nameable on the finish (not sweet enough to be mint, but not pungent enough to be menthol), which seemed endless. Intellectually intriguing wine, and the consensus WOTN. 94+ This seems to be at the very beginning of a long drinking window. Hold for a while, unless you've got plenty.
