Large shrub/small tree, many with exquisitely fragrant flowers. Widely-planted in Hawaii, but they should do well in your area. I agree that palms are better w/o orchids, which was part of my reason for suggesting plumeria, which are lovely in their own right and are very suitable for attaching orchids. We did a lot of that when we lived in Hawaii and they were beautiful.
