Indeed i wouldn't want to drink wine that stinks of fecal matter, but that's a question of correct winemaking rather than grape variety in most cases. I think the popularity of chardonnay is much about it's ability to adapt to many climates and terroirs, whereas other grapes, such as riesling, are much more difficult to grow outside of their "natural" territory.

Just like the alc argument, the article just ignores one very crucial thing, wine is not just a beverage for itsself, it's a complement to food at first. High alc wines just dont work well with many dishes. Some wines that are not a huge pleasure drinking on their own, can show perfectly with food.
Imagine Restaurants serving nothing but Chardonnay, Cabernet and Syrah at 15%.
