Ardbeg 10. Smokey, peaty, but sweet and plush. So good. Probably not best value for money, but sometimes that doesn't matter.
Hard to find better malt value for money, imho. Certainly one of my favourite basic distillery expressions, along with Clynelish 14, Cragganmore 12 and Highland-Park 12.
If i should rank them, i'say Clynelish 14 #1, Ardbeg 10 #2
You're on to something. Each of those - clynelish 14, hp 12, and ardbeg 10 - is usd$50 near me. While not cheap, that is a good price to quality. I stand corrected.
I've had plenty of $80+ malts that were not as good. My problem is that I have enjoyed tremendously several bottles of black bottle blended whisky for 20 bucks. Not ardbeg quality, of course, but it skewed my value perspective.
