That 1975 tour Sunny mentions was probably the last time he was worth seeing.
Actually, no it wasn't. He wasn't worth seeing even then.
I recall that the band was sloppy and lethargic, and Rod looked alternately bored and pissed off throughout the concert. The crowd went nuts for Heart (who played a blistering set) and sat on their hands for the Faces. Rod didn't like that. At one point he tried to get the crowd to sing along, and when they didn't respond he lay down on his back on the stage and sang the rest of the song from that position.
I had a similar situation back in the 70's when I saw HEART open for Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. Being a huge Deep Purple fan I was ecstatic that Ritchie was bringing his new band to my town, but they were terrible, even with Ronnie James Dio handling vocal duties. Keyboardist Tony Carey (RIP) seemed drunk out of his mind and they didn't even do an encore. Heart, on the other hand, were incredible. Ann Wilson's vocals were amazing and Nancy Wilson's playing impressive too.
