Dr. Fiona Hill: Born in England. Father was a coal miner, mother was a mid-wife. After the coal mines closed in that part of England, mother took on extra work sewing and at age 13, Fiona began working washing cars and working as a waitress. Ultimately, she studied Russian and History at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and then came to the US where she graduated from Harvard getting a master's degree in Russian and modern history in 1991, and her PhD in history in 1998.
Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman: Born in Ukraine. Mother died when he was an infant. Came to the US when he was 3. Has a BA from SUNY Binghamton, and a Masters from Harvard in Russian, Eastern Europe and and Central Asian studies. Served in combat in the US Army. Awarded a Purple Heart, the Ranger Tab, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, and Parachutist Badge, as well as four Army Commendation Medals and two Defense Meritorious Service Medals.
On the Committee: Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi: Born in New Delhi, India. Came to the US at 3 months. (Father was in school here). Lived in public housing, got food stamps. Attended public school in Peoria, Illinois, and was valedictorian of his class. Got a BA in mechanical engineering from Princeton University and then a law degree from Harvard Law School.
