Riesling, Barolo, ...

Great night with vinT and both of our better sides.

Nv Henriet-Bazin Champagne Premier Cru Sélection de Parcelles Brut.

From the East slopes of Montagne de Reims. 50% Chardonnay 50% Pinot Noir. 70% 2013 vintage 30% reserve wines ranging from 1968 to 2012. Dosage 8g/l disgorged Jan 2017.

Very vivid and lively small perlage which was long-lasting.  On the nose mostly citrus, green apples, tangerines and some yeast.  The present acidity nicely balanced the hardly to detect sweetness. Finish demonstrated some mineral characters.

This wine does not shine with a particular expression but rather is all about its balance. Recommended.

2010 Weingut Pfeffingen Ungsteiner Herrenberg Riesling GG trocken "M"

Deep golden color with intense nose of mainly grapey character. On the second day fading with appearance of flint and petrol. Ample acidity and bone dry just as expected. A bit of a bitterness towards the finish. Very nice.

2011 Zind Humbrecht Riesling Close Windsbuhl

Deep golden yellow color. The nose was a bit shy at first due to the cold serving  temperature.  As it warmed up in the glass it started revealing classic Riesling notes  but the real stunner was the palate. The texture of this wine allowed you to experience its components one after the other which made it for a pleasant experience mainly white flowers, citrus honeysuckle wrapped in a blanket of acidity with a slightly mineral finish. On the second day I found an even more expressive nose but with a much less complex mid palate and  a bitter undertone appearing in the finish.  Great

2094 Aldo e Riccardo Seghesio Barolo Vigneto la Villa

Deep opaque garnet with slightly orange rim.  Modern style barolo with noticeable oak treatment. Rich fruity character with traditional notes present in the background. Pronounced acidity carries into the medium long finish with tannins present and clearly demanding for some hearty dishes. Nice.

Cork showed significant mold under the wrapper and completely disintegrated into tiny crumbles upon being extracted. After filtering a quick sample confirmed that the light pinkish liquid was completely oxidized. You can't always win.

1964 Francine Barolo Riserva

Bright pale red and orange color.  Enticing notes of mushroom, underbrush, tar and tobacco on the nose. Soft and round with no sharp edges anywhere to be found. Fruit is still noticeable and mingles with all the other tertiary characters.  Medium finish. Lovely.

1996 Union of Winemaking Cooperatives of Samos Muscat Vin Doux

Muscat grapes have a very long history and Greece is one of the countries which is mentioned as possible ground zero for its world wild presence. Particular the higher elevations on Samos are known to produce very fresh examples and this one certainly did not lack its pedigree. Short but fully intact cork. Very dark amber color made me expect ripe raisin and nutty notes but NO - instead I found stewed green apple and caramel which were replayed on the palate. Appropriate acidity levels kept the sugar in check. Yummy
