Portrait Artist of the Year
A friend told me about this Brit SkyArts series. We’ve watched both the 2018 and 2019 editions.
The current season can be found on YouTube (search for “Portrait Artist of the year 2020”) where someone is posting each episode the morning after it airs in the UK. Two episodes to go in the current season.
Simple premise: in each episode 9 artists - some pros, some amateur - have 4 hours to paint a portrait of a celebrity sitter. Three judges then pick one artist to go on to the semi-finals. The ninth episode is the semi-final (with 8 artists), followed by the finals (with 3 artists). The winner receives a £10,000 commission to paint a celebrity portrait (the process of which is shown in episode 11). This season it will be Nile Rogers, and the portrait will hang in the Royal Albert Hall.
its a simple premise but it’s hugely compelling to see all the different approaches to portrait painting.
