Is this a gift for someone? If so, you should try to find out what kind of scotch he/she regularly drinks and go to a good liquor store to ask for advice.

If the giftee is a single-malt drinker (and most serious scotch drinkers are) then the Johnny will be seen as a novelty but will probably not be seen as a real scotch. Here's a link to a scotch discussion on this forum. I can recall some other threads, but I haven't looked them up.

If this is for yourself then my best advice is to go to a bar that has an extensive scotch list and try some different styles. In Chicago I can think of about a half-dozen or so of that type of bar and usually the barkeep is pretty open to discussion about the different styles (altho not necessarily on a Sat night). You can try them by the glass and figure out what immediately appeals to you, what is curious, and what tastes like crap.

I'm a big fan of the peaty malts, but I can also drink a good MaCallan or Highland Park depending on my mood.
