Big D! Series Episode Four: mattach does Big D!

mattach was in town on business today so we had a little gathering at Red Sage Euro American Bistro in Southlake. In attendance were THE291, Sapril, Sapril’s infamous friend, mattach and myself.

For dinner the group started off with a couple of orders of the Panko Crusted and Fried Camembert Cheese. Simply outstanding. Next was a plate of the Two Times Tuna (correct me if I’m wrong mattach). Excellent. I believe everybody had an excellent dinner as well. The Crispy Duck in Port Sauce was better than sex. Overall, everything was fantastic, as usual.

Very brief, cryptic and alcohol clouded comments only since I was too busy talking with these wonderful people to bother foraging around for a pen and paper. From memory:

Notes:
2002 Nigl Grüner Veltliner Qualitätswein Trocken Kremstal Kremser Freiheit
This is a nice Gruner Veltliner. The nose is a little muted at this early stage but the palate is light and refreshing with flavors of lemon grass and citrus fruits. Soft feeling in the mouth and very clean tasting. Drink and enjoy over the short term. Good QPR white for this summer

2001 Leonetti Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley
Excellent cabernet sauvignon from Washington. Mostly dark fruits, cassis and some red berries on the nose and palate. The nose and palate seem a lot like a Bordeaux wine to me. Not hugely tannic for such a young wine. Seems to me to have the stuff to last for several years. I’d let this one sit for 3-4 years and try again.

1988 Château Pichon-Longueville-Baron
Excellent wine that is drinking really well right now. Appealing nose. Soft, red fruit flavors on the palate. Well balanced. No reason to hold off on this one. It should hold for 4-6 years is my guess but is ready to go now. This was part 1 of my winning trifecta during the night.

1993 Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Private Reserve
This wine is still drinking well. Nose of cedar and chocolate. Flavors of cherries, red currants and fresh herbs. Still a good balance between the tannins and acidity. Should hold for another 2-4 years but I see no reason not to go ahead and drink these. This was part 2 of my winning trifecta during the night.

1999 Stags' Leap Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
I’d say this wine is tasting EXACTLY the same as it did the last time I had it on March 26th. A fairly earthy nose and palate that also included black berries and fresh herbs. A little tartness on the back of the palate. Still pretty well balanced. Probably won’t improve but should drink fine for another 4-5 years.

2000 Steltzner Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
I haven’t tried a Steltzner wine for a few years. It was good to be able to revisit one of their wines. This is more of a in your face, fruit forward wine in my opinion. Red cherries and berries dominate. It is running a little hot. I don’t see any reason to hold off on drinking this wine now. Good QPR.

2001 Drinkward Peschon Cabernet Sauvignon <Entre Deux Meres>
Received this during the heat wave 3-4 weeks ago so we popped this one tonight to make sure the shipment was OK. It was more than OK. First whiff on the nose and it reminded me of a St. Emilion, odd since I believe this is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and definitely several thousand miles from St. Emilion! THE291 suggested that maybe it was because the wine was in contact with the stems for period of time? Anyway, this is a lovely wine. Big nose if cedar, plum and other dark fruit that pretty much carries through to the palate. Good balance. Showed really well. I’d let this one sit 3-4 years and taste again at that time. This was part 3 of my winning trifecta during the night.

2001 Lewis Syrah Napa Valley Ethan's
I didn’t get a chance to really visit and then revisit with this wine. Seemed to be a pretty big wine. Slightly smoky nose if I recall correctly. Really coats the mouth. I’d say it is a wine you can drink over the next 5-6 years but I didn’t really do this wine the justice it deserved.
