Some friends and I opened up the first of three 2011's that I have been cellaring, with dinner last night. The '07 and '09 vintages I bought are long gone. According to Cellartracker, there was a 2012 put out, but I don't remember getting notice of that one. I'm guessing no more were made after that, Powell?
Anyway, a quick TN on the 2011. Popped and poured, you could sense the Napa pedigree with the first whiff; nothing else quite like it. Rich and ripe, the grapes must have been picked at just the right moment. Dark fruit flavors, and a perfect balance of tannin to fruit, with just a slight undercurrent of roasted beef. Absolutely no astringency on the back end. This is the way Cali cabs should be made. It's a pity I don't have more.
I hesitate to say that it is peaking right now, because I'm sure it has a good 5 years ahead of it, but it's hard to see how it could get any better than it was last night. I would give it a solid 95 pts. Well done, Powell!
