QPR of the Day: Castaño Yecla Monastrell 2003
Rough and ready, there is nothing subtle about this wine, but it's got the goods. Cherries, berries, and plums, this medium-to-full bodied wine has enough acidity to go well with food, and just enough tannin in the background to keep it interesting. This wine is decidedly rustic, but there is a freshness to this wine that only a young, inexpensive wine can have.

I've found it around town for $8-$10. It earns a grade of B from this wino. As such, the QPR is not great, but good; the fact remains that I keep on buying it. Go figure.

I've had a couple of corked ones of these and I've had much better luck with the 2001 Altos de la Hoya Monastrell for $9, plus after it opens up you get a chocolate component! Dessert in a dry red bottle!

I keep looking for those Jumilla and Yecla Monastrells

Waiting for kids to grow up so I can get back to attending offlines

I'd also suggest:

Bodegas Castano Solanera, Yecla
It is also made from Monastrell (aka Mourvedre)

I've had the 2002 and the 2001 (maybe the 2000 as well, but Im not sure), both have very good QPRs. Parker gave the 2002 90pts and so price has gone up this year, but I think you can still find it for $10-12.

When I feel the urge to exercise, I lay down till the feeling passes.

I haven't been able to find the Castano Solanera, but I agree that the Altos de la Hoya has a very good QPR. I've had the 2002 Altos de la Hoya Jumilla Monastrell and liked it a lot.
