Anoter note on body armour and hockey players. I've seen, in more than one instance a hockey player taking a puck to the grill, spits out teeth and blood, then continues to play on. When you can do that, then you can point the finger...

Yeah, sure hockey players are wusses! Roll Eyes

Serious gross misunderstanding of the game.

I've seen 100 times more serious injuries not involving a fight than I've ever seen from fighting. I think even at the NHL level the number of injuries that players mis games from due to fighting is on the order of 10-15 a year for 20 players x 30 teams x 80 games. The flu is more serious as far as games lost.

The equipment protects you from pucks, sticks and the contact that is part of the game. Anyone who would step out on a hockey rink with out gear on is a moron or has a death wish.

My most serious injury was from being tripped. It put me down for over a month and eventually led me to stop playing. I had on a helmet and to quote the doctor "It's the only thing that kept you from dieing".

At least we'll have number 2 this year. Roll Eyes It would be better if the Bruins made the playoffs and the Habs didn't.

Do I need to remind you guys what happened the last time the Habs and Bruins met in the playoffs? Or in 2002?

Raycroft and Dafoe have never been the same since. Not to pile-on (as opposed to pylons which is an apt description of some Bruins defencemen), I hear that Gerry Cheevers and Gilles Gilbert are still in treatment.

I'd hate to think that you meant that daft fighting game on ice. If you do - Blaze.

Armour? You don' need no steenkin' armour.

The guy who can really "point the finger" was Gump Worsley. More than 20 years as a pro, great in goal, and NEVER wore a face mask (until his last couple of games). I only saw him (on TV) a few times right at the end of his career, but man, that guy was FEARless! And had the scars to prove it.

Tell that to Ryan Hollweg - I guess Chris Simon didn't get the memo about not using your stick.

Maybe so, but that's only 1 guy, plus I think much like baseball, the speed of pucks has greatly increased since the 50's. Oh, and crazy people don't count, wait... that's the entire NHL, maybe I don't know what I'm saying. All I know is that if I was hit in the mouth with a puck and spat out all my teeth, you bet your a*# I'd wear a helmet.

Bobby Baun scored a Stanley Cup winning goal in overtime for Toronto after hurting his leg earlier in the game. When they examined it later (he didn't want to miss a shift) they discovered that it was broken. And I'm pretty sure there was no demerol back then.

Tough guys indeed....

You can't just leave that hanging out there, Otis....

DVD:

I was merely sticking up for some teammates as the refs lost control of the game. This goon actually kicked one our players with his skate (and only got 2 minutes in the box). Then later in the game, he cross-checked another one of my teammates across the head, bouncing his head off the ice like a basketball. As the goon stood over him spewing trash talk like Ali over Liston, I rocked him to the ice with a cross-check across the chest.

He got 2 minutes and I got a game misconduct and automatic two-game suspension. It's the cardinal rule in sports that the retaliator always gets off way worse than the initiator.

We played them again last night and the goon got booted from the game for swearing at the refs after we scored a goal in a scramble around the crease. Guess it all evens out in the end!

Cheers,

Otis

use a stick you get suspended in the NHL...this incident is alot rare than you might think.

but they do use it as a cheap shot but they do it very subtly...nothing that would break someones skull or something.

one "subtle" cheap shot slash i remember is when doug gilmore (i hate him) did it to tomas sandstrom ... broke his hand and was out for a long time.

Have they considered banning people for fighting? Or would that just ruin the game?

I play in the HNA league, as well as Skokie and Evanston rec. Fellow forumite Grossie captains the HNA team.

We looked into Johnny's, but the waiting list for our level was too long.

Cheers,

Otis

Will do, frenchie. I will play occasional Thursday night rat at Oak Park, or Friday night rat at Evanston or Northbrook.

You can email me at m dot boersma at comcast dot net if you are ever looking for a game in the northern burbs. Especially if you are a (good) goalie! We need one for the summer HNA league. I don't want to make grossie lace up the pads again. Razz

Cheers,

Otis

Where are the Bruins fans? Back-to-back wins by the Habs put the final nail in Boston's coffin for 2006!

Only thing left to say is: "Na na na na hey hey, goodbye"

AMEN! The only thing better than the Bruins being eliminated is that the Habs did it. Take that Steve8 and Bman, ya pair of traitors! Now the Habs need a little luck and a lot of gut to make it in themselves. Go Buffalo tonight!

French- we should touch base. It sounds like you probably live near me and you're a hockey player. I live about a mile from McFetridge. Email me at dr_grossie at yahoo dot com. Maybe we can get you out there to play for our team one of these days!
