Has there ever been a movie where 2 was as good or better than the original?

The Godfather is the only one that I can recall that was even close.

Sorry, they're joke trailers. I tried to give it a good lead. I should leave that up to Dave and T-Bird.

Agree with Empire Strikes Back. And Godfather 2. Some could argue that Aliens was a notch better than Alien. It's a tough call.

Ha! That's funny because I seriously thought about adding Aliens aswell but I didn't. I prefer it to the 1st Alien though (especially the long version).

It's a number 3, acually.

A Fistful of Dollars
For a Few Dollars More
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

And on an interesting note, the film Sanjuro that I listed was the sequal to Yojimbo, which were the original Japanese versions of A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More, directed by the great Akira Kurisawa. Also of note, Kurisawa's 1958 film "The Hidden Fortress" was the inspiration for Star Wars.

Oh, and to continue the tangent, Kurisawa's masterpiece "The Seven Samurai", which is my choice for the greatest western ever made (I know, I know, it's a samurai movie, but it's really a western in disguise), was remade in the US as The Magnificent Seven....which was followed by terrible sequals, beginning with "The Return of the Magnificent Seven". Smile

Ah, the magnificent seven. That is an excellent movie. Remakes better than originals are more plentiful.

The Seven Samurai is a much better movie than The Magnificent Seven. Samurai is possibly a top 10 film of all times IMHO.

Speaking of remakes (or perhaps reworks is a better word) Kurosawa's Ran is excellent. As is Polanski's Macbeth.

Agreed, "Ran" is an awesome version of King Lear. Kurisawa's version of Macbeth is called "Throne of Blood", another classic film. I prefer the latter, but both are amazing.

I agree with a few here

Godfather Part 2 (doesn't get any better - the ultimate sequel! as good or better than part 1)

Empire Strikes Back (not really a sequel, but my favorite of all 6 SW movies)

Rocky II

Definitely. The T-1000 was way cool, especially when he would just run after a speeding car. "That's a nice bike" Smile

The Road Warrior

Very cool movie. ".....The ayatollah of rock n roll-ah!"

Yes way for me. I loved Rocky II - the rest, well they just got worse and worse.

I do want to see the last one (Rocky Balboa) though.
