There are a ton of them but here are some of my favorites:

"Last Kiss" - Original – Wayne Cochran, Cover – Pearl Jam
"All Along The Watchtower" - Dylan, Hendrix
"All Along The Watchtower" - Dylan, U2
"Hound Dog" - Big Mama Thorton, Elvis Presley
"Wish You Were Here" - Pink Floyd, Widespread Panic
"Twist & Shout" - Top Notes, The Beatles
"Statesboro Blues" - Blind Willie McTell, Allman Brothers Band
"Maggie's Farm" - Dylan, Rage Against The Machine
"Look At Little Sister" - Hank Ballard & The Midnighters, Stevie Ray Vaughan
"I Shot The Sheriff" - Bob Marley, Eric Clapton
"Havana Affair" - Ramones, Red Hot Chili Peppers
"Higher Ground" - Stevie Wonder, Red Hot Chili Peppers
"American Woman" - Guess Who, Lenny Kravitz
"Rocking In The Free World" - Neil Young, Pearl Jam
"Voodoo Child" - Hendrix, SRV
"Little Wing" - Hendrix, SRV
"Take Me To The River" - Al Green, The Talking Heads
"Helter Skelter" - The Beatles, U2
"Heard It Through The Grapevine" - Gladys Knight & The Pips, Creedence Clearwater Revival

Yellow Ledbetter by Pearl Jam is not a cover but the guitar riff is a tribute to Hendrix as it is similar to Little Wing – great tune.

I've really enjoyed just about every Who cover by Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam. They did a live cover of Baba O'Reily (sp?) at a concert I was at and it rocked.

Cheers!

Not real current, but two covers that I thought better than the originals:

Willie Nelson--Always on My Mind--sorry, Elvis
Whitney Houston--I Will Always Love You--Dolly Parton

Does a remix count as a cover? If so, then:
JXL--A Little Less Conversation--Elvis Presley

Always loved two blues covers that Cream did:

"Born Under A Bad Sign" by Albert King, and

"I'm So Glad" by Skip James.

Jack Bruce is amazing on both.

2 votes for this already. Frankly, I'll take the Motley Crue version of HS over the U2 version any day.

X - Soul Kitchen
Wall of Voodoo - Ring of Fire
Devo - Satisfaction
Dead Kennedys - I Fought the Law

All classics.

And while on the subject of Ring of Fire, don't forget the tremendous remake by Social Distortion. Johnny would be proud.

Good one.

Did you hear him do Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind" on the last album. Awesome!

I'm a big Keb Mo' fan. One of my favorite Keb Mo' releases, Peace...Back by Popular Demand, has songs that are primarily covers:

Buffalo Springfield - For What It's Worth
Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes - Wake up Everybody
The Rascals - People Got to Be Free
Marvin Gaye - What's Happening Brother
Bob Dylan - The Times They Are A-Changin'
Donny Hathaway - Someday We'll All Be Free
Nick Lowe - (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding
John Lennon - Imagine

This is great music to listen to in the dwindling days of our Nations's fearless leader, Dubya.

You’ve pegged me, VT2IT – I’m a liberal, left-wing Jew. Oh, the horror of it!!

However, you should not be judging others. I’ve often thought after reading your posts; "That is a very dumb individual."

Thanks, I'll check it out.

When Cash gets the right song (as he did with Hurt), he's like a big dog with a new bone - he owns it! I also admire his rendition of Sunday Morning Coming Down, and Personal Jesus.

I love the Elvis Costello version. Another superb song that he covered was Robert Wyatt's "Shipbuilding".
