Due to a certain Ice Cream thread recently posted, I was reminded of my favorite cover song of all time:
You Really Got Me - Van Halen A young EVH turning The Kinks, and Hard Rock, onto their proverbial heads. "It's easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stockmarket beat, but the man worth-while, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat." -Judge Smails |

Tie between Cream's cover of The Mississippi Sheik's Sitting on top of the World and the Led Zeppelin version of Willie Dixon's You Shook Me. Of course somebody could prefer one of the 100 or so other covers of Sitting on top of the World.

I'll have to think about this one for a while. What I hate is when someone records a cover version of a song that sounds almost identical to the original. What's the point of that? Here is my quick list of my top 10 off the top of my head:
1. Pressure Drop by the Clash (original by Toots and the Maytalls) 2. Landslide by Smashing Pumpkins (original Stevie Nicks-Fleetwood Mac) 3. Proud Mary by Ike and Tina Turner (original by Credence Clearwater Revival) 4. My Way by Sid Vicious-Sex Pistols (orignal by Frank Sinatra and others). 5. Respect by Aretha Franklin (original by Otis Redding, which is very good too). 6. Satisfaction by Devo (original by Rolling Stones) 7. Take Me to the River by Talking Heads (original by Al Green) 8. The Man who Sold the World by Nirvana (original by David Bowie) 9. All along the Watch Tower by Jimi Hendrix (original Bob Dylan) 10. D'yer Maker by Sheryl Crow (orignial by Led Zeppelin is still the classic, of course). ----------------------- www.VinoCritic.Com |

Clapton covered Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" at Dylan's "Bobfest" in 1992. It absolutely smoked, and brings chills every time I hear it. And, while we are on Clapton, his covering of "I Shot the Sheriff" in 1974 helped introduce Bob Marley to the rest of the world.
Others: Red Red Wine by UB40 (Neil Diamond) Statesboro Blues by the Allman Brothers Band (Taj Mahal) Angel from Montgomery by Bonnie Raitt (John Prine) Blinded by the Light by Manfred Mann (the Boss) She Said, She Said by Gov't Mule (the Beatles) Key to the Highway by Derek and Dominos (Big Bill Broonzy) [see my moniker!] Little Wing by Derek and Dominos (James Marshall Hendrix) Little Wing by Stevie Ray Vaughan (Hendrix) Me and Bobby McGee by Janis Joplin (Kris Kristofferson) Man, there are a ton. What else? keytohwy |

Maybe not in the realm of "all time" but on a TV special honoring James Taylor, Keith Urban did an amazing bluesy cover of "Country Road." Incredible musicianship (especially his guitar work) and an overall great treatment of the song.

Don't forget Will Ferrel singing Dust in the Wind at Blue's funeral from the same movie. My access blocker at work is inhibiting me from clicking Gigond's link. Will have to wait to get home. ----------------------- www.VinoCritic.Com |

Not a cover song but just a revisit of some 80's skank music.... We need a worst music video thread.... -------------------- "One may dislike carrots, spinach, beetroot, or the skin on hot milk. I always liked Diamond Dave's version of California Girls. Of course, the video doesn't hurt.

Very good call. A few others that haven't been named yet: Helter Skelter -- Pat Benatar, U2 (Beatles) Motorhead -- Motorhead (yes it's a cover; Lemmy wrote it but the original was by Hawkwind) Stripped -- Rammstein (Depeche Mode) The Model -- Rammstein (Kraftwerk) First We Take Manhattan -- REM (Leonard Cohen) Bigmouth Strikes Again -- Placebo (The Smiths) Handbags and Gladrags -- Stereophonics (Rod Stewart) Kentucky Woman -- Deep Purple (Neil Diamond) Anything by Bob Dylan. Great songwriter, but I can't stand him as a singer. Sorry. Metallica's Garage Days Revisited album, in particular Breadfan (Budgie) Most of the Spawn soundtrack album. Not sure if that counts, but it's a great album. Shame the movie sucked so badly. http://scmwine.wikispaces.com http://scmwine.blogspot.com http://blogs.sun.com/davetong http://twitter.com/davetong |

Just off the top of my head
Husker Du's version of the Mary Tyler Moore show theme Heart doing Zepplin's Rock'N'Roll (I think Heart is about the best Zepplin cover band ever) Anything by Hayseed Dixie, especially AC-DC's TNT and Snoop Dog's Gin and Juice Red Hot Chili Peppers doing Stevie Wonder's Higher Ground. ------------------- "Believe in NOW!!" -- Slogan of the 2008 Detroit Lions (sic) |

What's the purpose of a Samantha Fox video with the majority of the footage dedicated to some semi-topless male dancers? She got her start not by singing, but by posing topless herself. The video would have been better if she traded costumes with the dude in the ripped tank-top. ----------------------- www.VinoCritic.Com |
