I'm an AC Milan fan, I could never work for Inter. It would be like a Texan coaching the Redskins. Wink

I got 5 out of 8 too, bro. Nothing to brag about. Cool Here are my knock-out predictions:

Portugal 2: Germany 1 (Portugal wins with golden goal)
Croatia 2: Turkey 1
Netherlands 3: Russia 0
Italy 2: Spain 2 (Italy wins in shoot out)

I pick Italy with my heart, not my brain. Without Pirlo, things are gonna be tough. But if Toni scores early, which he’s due to do, we’ll play 'okay' defence for the next 86 minutes Big Grin. I would like to see Portugal lose, but that's only because here in Toronto, the wops and the chops have a rivalry. I have some very close friends who are Portuguese, and I incessantly remind them of their loss to Greece and that we are Campioni del Mondo. This does not amuse them. The Portuguese should advance without any hiccups. Same with Holland. The Croatia / Turkey game should be a blood bath and very entertaining.

Let's go boys. Balls out.

So I guess I win, as I was 6 for 8. The two I got wrong were France and Switzerland. I thought the French could play defence first and scratch out a win or two, but they were just awful. Which makes me very happy. Big Grin It is certainly not an upset to see the Dutch go through. As for the Swiss they played much more open football than in the last World Cup and it cost them. Losing Frei in the first 40 minutes of the opening game had a big effect also. The biggest issue was in goal, all three that they allowed could have been stopped and both against the Turks should have been. Benaglio was a huge mistake, Zuberbuhler was great in the World Cup and came on in the last game to get a clean sheet versus Portugal. I truely believe that the Swiss could still be playing if he had started all three games. All in all it was a very entertaining group phase with lots of open football, other than the French and Greeks that is. I guess you could put Sweden in there too although they always play that way.

So now it's time for my quarter final calls
  • Portugal v Germany. I said the Germans would knock them out before the start so I'll stick with that. The Germans have the skill to exploit the Portugal back line amd the disipline to shut down their attack.
  • Croatia v Turkey. Have to go with Croatia, especially with the Turks missing 7 starters due to injury or cards.
  • Spain v Italy. I'm sure you know who I'll take here. It will be a hard tasks but I still have faith in the Azzurri. Like their Iberian neighbors I feel Spain is very weak on defence. Ramos in particular is a libility back there. Score first and Spain can be had. Even the US fielding a weak side in their last friendly shut them down pretty well.
  • Holland v Russia. this is going to be a lot tougher for the Dutch than many people think. I would never count out any side coached by Guus Hiddink. Russia looked awesome against the Swedes today and I expect this to be the match of the round. Lets say 3-2 for Netherlands.

I think it's going to be Portugal, Croatia, Netherlands, and Italy.

Right now, Podolski is a game-time decision, as is Frings. Considering Podolski has been on fire, he'd be sorely missed in this game. The way I see it, if he doesn't play, Portugal has a much better chance at winning. If he does ... well, it's going to be much better for Germany and they might go through.

Doh!

With the way I put the kiss of death on Portugal, I'd be nervous right now if I was rooting for Croatia, the Netherlands or Italy.

I do think Portugal is fun to watch, they just aren't the best team out there.
But what a blistering strike by Schwansteiger.

Thought I'd pop in real quick this morning to thumb my nose at all of you Germany bashers. I'm glad they finally decided to go with the starting lineup I wanted yesterday. Seems to have been much more effective.

Now I'm off to recite some more of my satanic chants in support of my team. Auf Wiedersehen.

If I had not been, jumping in and out of my chair and talking to the TV encouraging Portugal to do something , I guarantee you WIML would have slept through the entire game! Germany is a cure to insomnia.

Gee Mezzo just as I posted to gloat you were giving me credit. Cool As for my other picks, I sure hope I'm right. I do believe that Spain has the same problems as Portugal, and that Italy is better than Germany.
