Oh yee of little faith. Razz They actually played a good game today. I know France was down to ten at 25 minutes, but Italy played well before that, and it was their pressure that caused the red card. What was the big difference? I say playing a 4-4-2 like I said they should. Having DeRossi and Gattuso together in the middle helps so much in controlling the flow of the game. Unfortunately both Gattuso and Pirlo are going to miss the Spain game due to yellows. That is going to make it a minor miracle for them to reach the semis, but I still have faith. Smile The one thing that still needs to be fixed soon is somebody has to take Toni aside for a little talk. Something along the lines of "try to put the ball between the white poles with the net hanging on them Luca". Good god he could have had a hat trick in the first half. Chances must be finished if they are to have any chance of progressing. Now what should I open to celebrate? Big Grin

It really doesn't matter. Everybody else is playing for 2nd place after the Dutch. Actually, it would have been to the benefit of the Dutch to LOSE today as it would have made life easier for them in subsequent games.

Italian head coach, Donadoni, and Dutch head coach, van Basten, are best friends. They play golf together. I'm sure Donadoni wasn't overly happy when the Dutch decided to play 9 (or 7) substitutes, but Italy would have done the same thing.

The Dutch are definitely on a roll, and they should beat Russia or Sweden hands down.

Now the Portuguese versus the Germans....hmmmmmm. Gonna be another great game.

Blah blah. Enough with the thread drift. Back to the topic at hand.

Glad that Italy is through. The next game against Spain will be tough, with both Pirlo and Gattuso suspended. Obviously De Rossi will be running the show in the midfield, but the question is who will flank. I would like to see Acquilani and Camorenasi and not Ambrosini there. We will see.

Toni needs to break the duck and open the floodgates. He has left too many chances wanting and need to be on full form for Italy to have any chance to get past Spain.

The defense improved significantly and seem to have settled in following the win over France.

Unfortunate that Ribery was knocked out of the game early, as I think he has a lot of skill - even though this was to Italy's benefit. Abidal's straight red was 100% warranted, as he was the last defender and took out Toni on a clear scoring opportunity. People who have called the penalty "soft" need to read the rules.

Interesting matchup today is the Russia-Sweden game. I think Sweden will go through if Ibra can play a major portion of the game. If not, it might be a struggle.

Reviewing my picks from before the tournament:

Group A: Turkey, Portugal
Group B: Germany, Poland
Group C: Italy, France
Group D: Spain, Greece

5 out of 8. Not bad. I'll make my picks for the quarterfinals later.

I think Italy has a chance against Spain. Spain's defense is pretty exposed. We just need Toni to let go of the bad streak.
