(Actually, I prefer to think of it by its pre-Trudeau name of Dominion Day.)
I recognize that I'm a day early, but I was inspired by a a great article in this morning's National Post on the folly that is the Canadian system of government-controlled alcohol retailing.
Thanks for the link Slan. It's one of the few times when I actually agree with something from the National Post.
Indeed, if my history is accurate, Dominion Day became Canada Day in 1982 when Canada created its own Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
In other news, Hong Kong has recently eliminated duties on alcohol and removed related administrative controls to facilitate the import, export and storage of alcoholic beverages.
The irony is striking as I sit here in Toronto celebrating our freedom with some Champagne that I am restricted only to buy from a government controlled monopoly, while my friends in Communist Hong Kong are free to buy/trade from anywhere in the world.
Happy Canada day to us all, including those that work at the National Post!!

Heading out to Elgin Park this morning and then working my way down to Queen's key. Not sure which fire works show to watch tonight, so many large ones to pick from,...most likely the one at Ontario Place tonight.
