I think this show looks outstanding. I guess the team behind the show The Wire is involved in this. I can't wait. The programming on Showtime has not really won me over like HBO. Anyone else think this looks good?
This show is only ok, but interesting. Military must be a frustrating job. I wonder if the dialogue is realistic or changed for TV. I imagined Marine Recon types being more stoic.
I am watching. Caught the first episode while on business last week and will watch numebr 2 tonight. I am not familiar with the book but the first episode kept my interest enough to add it to the DVR.

Most of the shows on HBO are top quality. As for GK...i really like it. I won't pretend to have any idea what being in combat is like but it seems realistic. Seems to provide enough realism without glamorizing/ over using violence (not that there aren't disturbing images).

The Marine Corps PA office just released a press release on this today denouncing the show. There are SOME facts in the show that are accurate, but it is not a true portrayal. This I can also speak to from experience(I'm a Marine Corps Staff Sergeant). It is an entertaining show though.

It was written by an embedded journalist who went to Iraq. True story, well what is and what is not I don't know, but some parts are. Some of the people were kicked out of the corps for what they said. Reyes is an actual Marine who was there.
Thanks for bringing that up spo. The Generation Kill book/series illustrates how the coverage of the Iraq war has changed over the years. I may not know everything about wine ( ), but I do know this issue well. Copy and images like this, from professional journalists, are not being produced today with any regularity.
We have quite a few veterans and military men/women on the WS boards. First off, thanks for your service, and I sympathize with those who say that the Iraq conflict is being underreported currently. I'd agree wholeheartedly, there are incredible stories that are not being told. But, sadly, the flow of information is rapidly drying up: NY Times story from Saturday.

I enjoy the show more and more with each passing episode. Great sense of humor. The bit with the interpreter where the soldiers were speculating as to what they were talking about was way too funny. A bunch of those guys are characters. Catch them on On Demand when your wife is not paying attention.
I thought this series was excellent, though I couldn't understand a lot of the jargon they used. But it seemed to capture just how gritty and $hitty it must be if you're a young person who's being put in harm's way constantly, with no recourse but to do as you're told.
There was a similar series called 'Over There' (produced by Steve Bochco) that had a real edge to it, as well. Got cancelled after 1 season. Too bad!

My best friend just got promoted to the rank of Captain in the Marine Corp, he has been to Iraq several times. He said the show is far more entertainment than it is reality.
go figure... i bet he'd also say scrubs isn't really a medical show...

I thought the quality of Over There went downhill about half way through the season.
What I really loved about Generation Kill was the dialogue and the personality and sense of humor of the soldiers.
