CCR, that's sweet that you do that for your wife and daughters.
I know I'm not sweet and wonderful every day (I know you're all shocked) but I think M. and I definitely go out of our way to do special things for one another regularly. If it was important to him that we celebrated Valentine's Day then I'd get him something.
For me, I prefer to celebrate Valentine's Day by doing some sort of volunteer work at a nursing home or with kids and give to an animal shelter (I do volunteer work regularly but like to do something on days like this as well). I'm all about the love.
I don't begrudge anyone who wants to celebrate that day in a more traditional way. It's just not for me.

Hopw can that be a bad thing? If you do it because "Hallmark tells you to," that's because you are a loser, not Hallmark. So many deconstruct holidays into purely commercial affairs. Some go that route, but the feeling in the air is nice. I send my wife and my daughters roses every Valentine's Day. They love it. It makes them happy. They know I do it because I love them.
Holidays are not either menaingful or materialistic shams.
The biggest lie is when people bag on holidays and then claim they are sweet to their spouse all year. While I admire the thought, no one can be sweet every day.
Goodness, just enjoy the day and stop being so damned gloomy about one of the nicest days of the year.
Gee you do what society expects, you do not use your own freewill to decide when to send flowers. I guess that I read you wrong and you are actually a pantie wearing liberal.
Remember to always aim high, that way you won't get any on your shoes.
I am working; restaurant industry employee, and will be working until 1 am or so, like I have for the last 10 years every Valentine's Day.
As far a sit being a sham, we will take it in restaurants. Big sales day for us; although there are few big spenders (many amateurs out that night) there are alot of them...
I've got a bottle of Veuve Rose, a box of extravagently good Belgian chocolates and I haven't decided what I'm doing for dinner yet but I will be cooking.

Good for you Een! We try to do similar things for Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc. This weekend, I cooked up a few trays of beef pasta macaroni that we are going to drop off at one of my favorite shelters. I want to get my daughter involved in the process and the idea behind the process but the shelter has these silly rules about kids in their kitchens; hence why we cook at home and then bring to there.
Then we are going to hit up a favorite sushi place

That is incredibly cruel!
Just one more sip.

Bless you Bella. It's a kind thing you are doing. Grunhauser will be preparing a high tech, molecular gastronomy selection for the homeless in San Francisco. Everyone there is very sophisticated.

I am cooking a beautiful lunch. Don't know exactly what it will be yet, because my better half is out getting whatever is fresh now. Most likely some wonderful seafood. Champagne of course and candles in the daytime.
Thereafter we will go to a "classic" movie in our beautifully restored, downtown theater. We can count on the fingers of one hand the movies that we've attended—so, this will be a treat.
