in 1980, inflation was at an INSANELY high level so the run up of gold was there already before interest rates were jacked up to 14% but look at the clamp down affect it had from the 88-2000 periods, record low inflation and record low gold prices. I'm just pointing out there is a correlation between inflation and gold. And there is a correlation between inflation and fed rates. They may disconnect temporarily, but they do fall in line afterwards as there is a lag effect. If you forgot in 2003-2004 Greenspan was worried about "Deflation" and aggressively lowered interest rates, leading to, arguably, our housing bubble and current inflationary environment. As with historical performance. If you had bought gold in 1987 as you thought inflation was going to shoot up, you would have been very upset that gold would have lost you money until 2004 where gold finally made back it's high in 87. Fed fund rates have a lag effect that people don't consider when they think "raise rates... fight inflation". Anyhow if I had a crystal ball, I would have bought dell at 1$ and not be worried about this "Credit crisis" |

To make lots of money in the long run requires buying low and selling high. Seems obvious, doesn't it? The problem is the potential short term damage if one is too early.
For myself, I am not buying anything yet. But if one were interested in trying to catch a falling knife, one has to be intrigued by the possibility of investing in SUVs right now. Ducking to avoid the rants of those who think recent trends will continue forever into the future. Moo I'm a dairy heir. Think about how stupid the average person is. Does a bovine market follow a bear market? ___________________________________________________ It's good to try them young too and then let them age - James Suckling Infanticide can be very satisfying - Robert Parker I drink mine young to avoid disappointments - James Laube |

A true bovine just wants to be left alone to his life of cud chewing and flatulence. GW be damned.
As to a bovine market after a bear market, discuss. Sell in May and go away. Moo I'm a dairy heir. Think about how stupid the average person is. Then realize that half the people are stupider than THAT. By definition 50% of the population is below the median intelligence level and all it takes to get elected is 50% + 1 vote. |

Actually.....for the last several months I have been looking for some bargains. Not SUV's, but big, fullsize, diesel guzzling trucks. Surprisingly, people are still willing to buy these, and are paying too much for them. |

Where is the bottom? |

And, don't get me started on newspapers. I've got a bit of Gannett stock, and nice to see it bust through $20, when it was above $80 just a few years ago.

Why GM decided three years ago that their long-term plan was to build and sell trucks and SUV's is beyond me....although it probably made sense after they started to sell all those hummers.

Three years ago, it was their only profitable part of their business. Now, that is now dead as well. |

unfortunately, 12 years ago, they dumped the electric car. they would be cornering the market about now had they continued. which goes to show you, GM's got no vision. and they only have to look in the mirror for someone to blame. |

Well, nothing but bad news on the Squawk Box this morning.
Oil over $145 this morning, rumors on job report in about an hour could be brutal, ECB going to raise rate by 1/4 and consumer spending in a free fall. Grab your wallet, not looking good going into a three day weekend. |

It's really a shame. Cadillac is producing some outstanding vehicles. I've been considering the 2009 CTS-V when it comes it out this fall, but the mileage will be absolutely horrible, I'm guessing.
