I just got my member ID on here and have to weigh in on this one!!
I lean toward the ones with lots of great guest artists:
Eric Clapton - Crossroads Guitar Festival - it's got Robert Cray, Jimme Vaughan, Buddy Guy, BB King and on and on - great one!!
A Tribute To Stevie Ray Vaughan - it's got Eric Clapton, BB King, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Bonnie Raitt, my favorite - John Hiatt, and Art Neville
The Neville Brothers - Tell it like it is - guests include Gregg Allman, Ed Bradley (yes, from 60 minutes), Jimmy Buffet and on and on.
Tom Petty - High Grass Dogs, Live from the Fillmore (love Petty)
And, even though I don't own it, who wouldn't include The Band - The Last Waltz?

The biggest, perhaps only strike, against The Last Waltz DVD is that the later 4 cd set has more music and better sound. The best sound on any cd I've ever heard.

SRV Austin City Limits is also fun.

Mine are as follows - in no particular order:

Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense
Nirvana - Unplugged
Led Zeppelin - Song Remains the Same
The Who - Tommy
U2 - Live at Red Rocks or Live Aid (Queen may have played a longer set, but BAD stole the show)

Just picked up three new ones.

Gigabit had U2- Live at Red Rocks. A GREAT DVD, BUT it was just released on 9/30/08 (HMM). I have the original vinyl EP which was one of my favorites from my college years. My 6 year old Sony camcorder could take better video as it is VERY grainy and has light trails GALORE. The higher resolution in DTS makes some tracks sound better and others worse, but is a GREAT performance, especially the last four songs.

He also had Nirvana Unplugged, which I had the CD for years. The DVD soundtrack has a DTS track which is among the best mixes I have ever heard and is FREAKIN AWESOME. Great video quality too (for 4:3), and is the best way to remember the presence of Kurt Cobain. Highly recommended.

Also picked up the new John Mayer DVD (Where the light is) which features an acoustic performance, a Trio performance (with great blues and Hendrix cover), and his regular band. Video is OK (16:9), and the soundtrack is only Dolby and uses little in the surround channels, but still a very nice DVD that shows a musician that has matured to the point of playing with the likes of Steve Jordan. Not a fluff pop piece, this is real music.

I stand by my comments. The best part is the Trio set, then the acoustic, then the full band (but there is no sappy Your Body is a Wonderland). Anyway, here's a sample of the Trio set. You decide if it's bubblegum crap. I just think you're jealous of the girls he dates. Razz

I have been a U2 fan for about 25 years; Under a Blood Red Sky was the first U2 album (cassette) I purchased. I also have it on vinyl, along with War, The Unforgettable Fire, Wide Awake in America, and The Joshua Tree.

I periodically pop in my VHS copy of the Red Rocks concert, and I always enjoy it, despite the inferior video and sound. In fact, I was just watching it last month, and I wondered again when it would be released on DVD.

I picked up the DVD yesterday and I'm pleased with the additional commentary, footage, and tracks.

Picked up the Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds Live at Radio City disc and really liked it. It's just the two of them on acoustic guitars playing Dave's songs and a few covers. Over 2.5 hours of music on two discs. Very high quality video and audio (available on BluRay too). TR can play though I find he's sometimes OTT with the pedal effects.

Also have Traffic's new Live at Santa Monica disc on the way (had to buy online as is sold out everywhere), along with Incubus' new Look Alive disc. Will arrive this weekend and will report back after watching.

What a great topic to find on a wine site!!! My top five as of today would include...

1. Pink Floyd - Pulse
Simply the most stunning visual concert ever filmed.

2. Rush - R30
I am a major fan of this band (all three are huge wine drinkers too) and this DVD really captured their 30th Anniversary tour in great fashion.

3. The Who - Live at the Isle of Wight
More than 35 years after being filmed this might be the best video to ever capture the band. Townshend and Co are in top form and John Entwistle really blazes on the bass.

4. Genesis - Genesis In Concert
Filmed in 1976 or 1977 the quality is not the greatest but it really captures this band after the departure of Peter Gabriel and before they moved into a more pop direction. Phil Collins is in top form, sporting a beard and a full head of hair.

5. David Gilmour - On An Island
Filmed in HiDef and released in Blu-Ray the quality of this DVD is unbelieveable. The surprise appearance of Graham Nash, David Crosby, and David Bowie makes it all the more worthwile.

Lots of great suggestions here, and I particularly like a lot of the U2 concerts that have been mentioned. While crappy as a movie I think some of U2's best concert footage comes from Rattle and Hum, taken at the absolute peak of their popularity. Does that count as a concert DVD?

AZCat-

I saw U2 at McNichols Arena on November 7th and 8th, 1987; they shot most of the indoor footage from Rattle & Hum at those shows. The Sunday night show was amazing! I agree that much of the concert footage from that movie is excellent.

Very cool - I can't imagine what it must have been like to see them at their height in a smaller arena like that.

Some friends of mine offered to stand in line for me for the $5 tickets to the two shows at Sun Devil Stadium, but I passed because I wasn't "that into U2". Of course, they saw a couple of historic shows, I pulled my head out of my arse (as the lads from Ireland would say) and became a huge fan, and I've regretted passing that opportunity up every day for the last 20+ years. The lesson, as usual: I'm an idiot.

Watched the Traffic - Live at Santa Monica DVD for the second time. You don't get a lot for $15 as it's only 8 songs and is stereo only and is 36 year old video versus a film transfer, BUT you get a GREAT band in top form performing great material. Winwood is a grizzled veteran at this point at 24, nine years after starting the Spencer Davis Group, and three after Blind Faith and hanging with Clapton & Hendrix. Rebop the bongo player sets the African-American style for the Bill Cosby Show 15 years later, and all the wild triactetate shirts bring me back to the 70's. You cannot watch this and not be amazed at the quality of the musicians and the music (OK this was the time of 8 minute songs). A classic.

Incubus - Look Alive. This video is a conglomeration of different concerts and performances which can get a little old, switching from B&W to color, different venues, clothing, etc. during the same song, but I like it as I am a big fan of their last album which is covered well here. The Red Rocks concert is a better and more conventionally packaged concert, but I was not as enamered with their 04 album. Definitely worth the $10 I paid.

Those shows at Sun Devil Stadium would have been very enjoyable (also featured prominently in the movie).

I saw them the opening night of The Joshua Tree Tour April 2, 1987 at ASU Arena. It was the first time I saw them in concert.

I have since seen them three more times in Arizona: All That You Can't Leave Behind Tour (America West Arena) and Vertigo Tour (Glendale Arena, two consecutive nights, beautiful facility).

I first saw U2 in concert a bit over 25 years ago -- the summer of '83 at NC State, one of the old stadium concerts. Bono was a crazy man that day, climbing speaker towers in the rain. I doubt he does that much anymore.

I will have to get the Red Rocks DVD. I have not seen it. However, I have seen many good shows at Red Rocks.

Anyway to the topic at hand . . .

1) Eagles -- Hell Freezes Over
2) Birtles, Shurock & Gobles -- Full Circle

I love the version of Bad on that DVD. This is also available on BluRay now. That was one of the first concert DVD's I got, and I took it to my brother-in-laws's new home which has a media room with a large projection screen. His wife is Irish and has lots of aunts, uncles, and cousins and it seems like one is visiting from Ireland everytime I go over there. Anyway, my sister-in-law's aunt (who is nearly 70) sits next to me to watch this and proceeds to tell me she used to cut Bono's hair in the late 70's, saying, "he was a fine lad and really seemed like he was headed for stardom." She was into the video. Thought that was pretty cool.

Sharkey/Vinole-

U2 played in SLC two nights before the Red Rocks show in 1983. There is an urban legend that they were not well-received and, therefore, did not return to SLC until the Popmart Tour in 1997. Eek

I travelled all over the Western U.S. during that period in order to see them perform (Sacramento, Denver, Phoenix, etc).

I was living in the Denver area in 1996 and made a trip up to Red Rocks on a rainy Sunday afternoon. I would describe that day as visceral, esoteric, and spiritual. Smile

Wow, must have been amazing to see them at Red Rocks. My first U2 concert was at the ASU Arena (now Wells Fargo Arena) on the Zoo TV tour. Seen every U2 show in Phoenix since. The last one at the Glendale Arena was excellent. I liked a lot of the music on Pop (unlike a lot of people) but the Popmart tour didn't translate well in large venues like Sun Devil Stadium.
