here is a potentially really dumb question .... can a blu ray dvd playing machine (like PS3 and regular sony blu ray dvd players) abe to play regular non-hi def dvds?....
i don't have any blu ray movies 'cause i don't have the machine to play them. And, i don't have any HD DVD's (i don't think anyway)...but only regular movie dvd's . What do movie rental places rent out anyway, ... like blockbusters, ...and rogers???

This is one great benefit to being behind the times with entertainment technology. No MP3 player, no hi-def TV, no blue ray etc. I'll just wait until the HD TV's are $400, the ipods are $20 and the blue ray players are $40. When they become old news and the next great thing takes their place, I'll buy.

canada.com featured an article talking bout how blu-ray is going to win out over hd dvds and how warner bros has already defected to blu-ray. now blu-ray has 70% of hollywood movies so i doubt just hd dvds are going to win the race. apparently toshiba will hafta back out soon.

janers: You're not paying attention. Toshiba already has backed out. HD DVD is now officially dead.

The problem is that there are still issues with the BluRay spec, such as the requirement to use AACS. Some content owners don't *want* to spend money on DRM, so it would not surprise me to see a few more versions of the Bluray spec before the end.

Therefore if you plan to buy a BluRay player make sure that the firmware is updateable and will be supported. That's why the PS3 remains the best choice currently.

Keep a lookout for Amazon.com and jr.com and best buy sales. Good deals can be had, and the majority of blu-ray discs I have purchased were for around $15.

Hopefully, now that Universal and Paramount have officially gone blu, there will soon be an abundance of titles available. This glut can drive prices down.

And, there's the very important truth that blu-ray will be competing for the standard DVD market; not with HD DVD.
