I have never seen my Father happier than when he and I went to Campbell River, B.C. or River's Inlet to catch some big Kings. Those trips were among the few times I ever saw him without those deep worry creases on his forehead. It was kind of like we fooled time and I got to spend time with my Dad when he was a kid. Pretty nice memory of the greatest man I have ever known.

cdr, I live in Campbell River...this area is truly magical. Your post brought back some great memories of my own Dad, he probably caught thousands of fish in his lifetime, and like your Dad, each catch made him act like a kid! Nothing like fishing with just you and your Dad...

I've been fishing since I was four years old. I live near salt water, but I'm a freshwater fisherman, mostly fly and spin fishing. Most summers, we fly up to Nunavut for catch-and-release wilderness fishing for large pike, lake trout, walleye, and grayling. I've been raft fishing for salmon, trout, char, and grayling in Alaska. One of my biggest thrills in fishing was the first time I caught a fish on a fly I tied. We used to fly in to remote lakes in Ontario and Quebec, but people took large fish, and small ones, out. The relatively non-fertile northern lakes can become rapidly depleted of large fish. That's why it's strictly catch-and-release for me now.
Just one more sip.

pippin, awesome, me and my buddies fished that area about two years ago and it was great! My buddy caught a 6lb brown on the trinity, and we all hooked into a few steelies. Where do you eat around there?

Going for salmon and rainbow this weekend. I hope to post next week (if we have any success). We'll be in the Georgian Bay, Pretty River, and Nottawasaga River area.

Costa Rica's great. but there are also plenty of yellowtail right here in San Diego. Yellowtail season is just starting up, and runs through the summer. Can get some yellow fin (ahi) tuna down here also.

quote: I was wondering if there are any more fisherman in the forums, and what do you fish for?
I love fishing, especially for trout, especially in rivers, especially with a fly rod. I'm no purist, I've dunked my fair share of worms, but prefer the fly rod. A couple of friends and I are planning our 6th annual "trout trip" to northern Michigan. Some look forward to the fishing, while others seem more interested in the wine we open when the hatch is over. I like both

I love to fly fish. I grew up bass fishing with my dad, but migrated towards the fly rod when I was 14. I still spin/bait fish too. I actually worked in fly shop every summer while I was in college and it was a blast. I Mostly trout fish, but love to salwater flyfish as well. If anyone ever wants to talk fishing of any kind, I am in.

I think a fishing trip/offline would be a wonderful idea.

Board-O Ooops, sorry, just noticed you answered my question in a previous post. What I meant was, where is your annual off-line fishing/wine event that you alluded to?

I take wine with me to Nunavut. Unfortunately, there's a weight limitation for the flight from Winipeg to Nunavut, but the outfitter cuts me a little slack. I usually only take 2 bottles.
Just one more sip.

I'm a fishing nut, unfortunately a 14 yr. olds' sports life and a career get in the way (along w/the occassional round of golf). I've got a Skeeter bass boat and do a bit of casting now and again, but mostly fish the docks and cover on Lake Lanier for crappie in the spring and troll for stripers in the fall/winter. I flyfish as well, though not yet in saltwater. My younger brother and I did a trip to CA back in '04 that included the upper Owens, Hot Creek, and numerous smaller streams and lakes in the area between Bishop and Mammoth Lakes. We're headed to SLC and then on to Jackson, WY at the end of June; I've got a float trip on the Snake planned w/my son - his 1st flyfishing trip. We'll also hit some of the streams in the area; hopefully the run-off will be done and we'll see some clear water. On the occassion that we get to HHI, I've done some in-shore light tackle for sea trout and redfish; nothing like a 15 lbs. red on light spinning tackle. I'm w/mountainman - fishing offline! (No special guests for dinner this time )

I do. Head up from Tom's Place to the Mosquito Flats trailhead above Rock Creek Lake. The chain of lakes up that trail (Box Lake, Long Lake, can't remember the others) and the creeks linking them are full of rainbows and brookies. Gotta get a bit higher in elevation for Goldens. Rock Creek Lake (and its surrounds) were a haven for us when we were kids growing up in LA. I don't remember the name of the little campground across 395 from Tom's Place, but we stayed there many a night when a late spring snowstorm made camping at Rock Creek Lake impossible.

mm; Hope you and the family are well. I just landed (no pun intended) a large project up in Reno and will be out that way a good bit this summer. I'll have to make an early weekend trip and head South; another good friend in the area is going to take me fishing on the Walker. Perhaps we can pop a cork or seven. Say hi to Stemor for me!

Kybo, my original post was talking about a trip where we camped across from Tom's place. There's a few campgrounds in the area, but the only one that was open was Holiday. We got caught in a huge snowstorm and one of my buddies got pretty sick so we left a little earlier than expected. Although, I really didn't mind, the weather was awful and I was getting a little wore down. The fishing was great though, In three days I hooked into 12 rainbows and 3 browns, all above 10 inches, and caught one really nice 3.5 pound rainbow that fought like a steelie, maybe it was an Alper. Great fishing, awful weather.
