Indeed! And to extend it even further, Graham Nash's first solo album, "Songs For Beginners" is a favorite of mine. ------------------------- "I don't want to manage my cellar... I want to drink it." - Jancis Robinson |

The debut solo album of Pat Metheny (my all-time favorite guitarist, jazz or otherwise), "Bright Size Life," is just a prelude to the incredible volume of music he would produce. The first "official" album by the Pat Metheny Group (self titled), with the amazing Lyle Mays on keyboards, is still one of the most incredible, timeless body of music I've ever heard.

I've owned more copies of Pat Methey Group, Pat Metheney Group than any other. San Lorenzo is a beautiful piece of writing and the performing fantastic.
Good call, Duckfan ********************************************** "I wish I'd a been a doctor. Maybe I'd have saved some life that's been lost. Maybe I'd have done some good in the world, instead of burning every bridge I've crossed." -Bob Dylan |

The Pretenders--the first side of that first album is about as good as it gets. (the flip side isn't bad, either).
I also like Elvis Costello's "My Aim is True", and several already mentioned above. ------------------- "Believe in NOW!!" -- Slogan of the 2008 Detroit Lions (sic) |

I still remember the first time I heard the album Pat Metheny Group , especially "San Lorenzo," and thinking that the "fusion" label/description the band was given just didn't seem appropriate... it transcended far more than a specific genre, IMO. I listened to "San Lorenzo" over and over and over and just couldn't believe what I was hearing; just a beautiful piece of music, with Lyle Mays' piano playing indescribable. The live version of "Are You Going With Me?" from the Travels album/CD has the same effect on me... incredible, timeless, powerful music. ------------------------- "I don't want to manage my cellar... I want to drink it." - Jancis Robinson |

I knew I'd get it with that one! But it is a great debut album. |

Agreed. On the other hand, David Gilmour's self titled debut solo album is pretty impressive. ------------------------- "I don't want to manage my cellar... I want to drink it." - Jancis Robinson |

There are those who liked Syd's Floyd, and those who liked the bombastic, overbearing, self-loathing of Roger Water's Floyd. To each his own. |

Piss me off! I was gonna mention those. Kudos. OK, I gotta try some not yet listed: John Prine's debut. Lake Peter Gabriel's first solo LP. Talking Heads: '77 Elvis Costello's My Aim is True Nick Lowe's Jesus of Cool/Pure Pop For Now People Marshall Crenshaw's eponymous debut Joe Jackson's Look Sharp! Pretty Hate Machine was freakin' awesome. Nick Drake's first. I guess, technically speaking, the first LP Ian Dury did with the Blockheads was kind of a debut - New Boots and Panties. Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville. Morphine's Good was earthshakingly great. OK, enough for now. Sorry if I duplicated any. __________________________ __________________________ "What is man, when you come to think upon him, but a minutely set, ingenious machine for turning, with infinite artfulness, the red wine of Shiraz into urine?" -Isak Dinesen |

My god, I agree with cdr on something (great call duckfaninmt) I kind of got into other stuff for a few years, but I have much of Metheny's discography (faves are 80/81, Offramp, Question/Answer), and love his self titled debut, and his first fusion "Group" effort. Amazing improvisation and comping. He's wonderful in concert if you ever get a chance. -IB Ban Trolls. |
