I was listening to my iPod shuffle some music the other day and it seemed to hit on a few tracks from bands/artists' debut album. Got me thinking. What do you think are among the best debut albums? I've got a few:
The Doors - The Doors Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced Led Zeppelin - I Any other good ones? keytohwy |

maybe i am (reverse) aging myself, but what about Lenny Kravitz 'Let Love Rule' or Pearl Jam with '10'. both are arguably the best efforts that either have made and each have released many albums.

Lots of great ones. A few of my favorite debuts that come to mind:
"August and Everything After" by the Counting Crows. "Dry" PJ Harvey "The Chronic" Dr. Dre "The Goldberg Variations" Glenn Gould (first major recording) "Tidal" Fiona Apple -B "You should always read the label, you should always read it well"-Mrs. Featherbottom, AKA Tobias Funke |

Ok, this is obviously a quasi-cheat. But, to me, undeniably the correct answer...
Derek and the Dominoes - Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs I like all three on your list and other runners-up would be... The Band - Music From Big Pink Arlo Guthrie - Alice's Restaurant A little farther down on my list... Leonard Cohen - Songs Phil Ochs - All the News That's Fit to Sing And, although I do not listen to this stuff much anymore, I still respect Gun 'n Roses - Appetite for Destruction and Pearl Jam - Ten This message has been edited. Best debut: Tubular Bells, by Mike Oldfield. It's a double debut, as it was also the first album released by Richard Branson's Virgin Records.
Some others that I'd nominate that quickly come to mind: Black Sabbath Kasabian Stereophonics - Word Gets Around Pearl Jam and The Doors definitely deserves to be up there. http://scmwine.wikispaces.com http://scmwine.blogspot.com http://blogs.sun.com/davetong http://twitter.com/davetong |

No other album brings back high school memories more than “The Chronic”. One of the best rap albums ever.
Same goes for “Appetite for Destruction” for middle school. I wish I still had that much hair. |

Some eponymous jazz debuts-
"Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers" "The New Miles Davis Quintet" "Weather Report" "Return to Forever" None are debuts by the individual artists, of course. BTW- Arlo Guthrie? Should we also be listing initial recordings by Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, and George Carlin? |

I may be dating myself but I thought The Cars first album was great.

The Cars? That's not dating yourself, just showing incredible poor taste.

The Smiths-The Smiths Jeff Buckley-Grace(kinda cheating 'cause it was his only and last one) and many many others... *********************** "I have drunk not to the clouding of my reason, but just so much that I can still surely distinguish the syllables with my tongue." Athenaeus |

Bingo. This album is timeless, and I'm really enjoying seeing by 14 year old son play it to death. |

I don't think "The Last Drag" their first album/CD, but even if it wasn't, it's a great one. Love the entire album, especially "Still Water"... I can still remember you Like a wish that won't come true All the rumors do add up Do they always? Still water does run deep Your currents pull me through my sleep It goes away but then comes back Will it always? The other Samples CD I own is "Autopilot" and, as sappy as it sounds, the first song on the record/CD always tugs at the ol' heartstrings... I believe it was written for one of the members' mother who was slowly dying, then died, of a degenerative disease... If you need water I'm your rain If you need fire I'm your flame If you're resisting to go or stay Let all the angels take you away I will carry you to the end When life is broken all will mend If where I'm walking isn't far enough then I'll walk farther if you need water I'm your rain If you need fire I'm your flame I hope our children remember this good we threw those ashes and there we stood as tears fall off our faces as tears fall off our faces off our faces ------------------------- "I don't want to manage my cellar... I've always thought the first Crosby, Stills, and Nash album, "CSN," was pretty damn good.

Well, if we're gonna count that (and who says we shouldn't?) I'd say Deja Vu is an even better album. (Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young's first album "What contemptible scoundrel stole the cork from my lunch?" -- W.C. Fields |
