My upset pick is Bernardini. I am guessing that Barbaro, Sweetnorthernsaint and Brother Derek will contend early and maybe the other two will beat Barbaro up. Bernardini is bred for distance.
So, that's my pick.
Keep in mind I have never picked a triple crown winner.

I have, Secretariat. Probably doesn't qualify as brilliant. The Preakness is a bit shorter than the darby and a truer race for 3 year olds. Also, it is nowhere near as crowded. Selective picking of the horse is more important because there is less luck involved in getting a clean ride. Barbaro is undefeated and was really impressive in KY; also he is almost a local.

OK irwin, I'm watching the post parade now. I will go with Brother Derek. I think he runs a much better race today.

Cheers,

Otis

They are SO, SO powerful and have such hearts. I hope the blood flow has not been damanged.

The town is in mourning at the moment, praying for Barbaro.
I had the winner.
Big deal.

Barbaro suffered two breaks in his back right leg during the first 1/4 mile.

Career over and surgery today will tell if the blood flow to the lower leg was damanged. If so, he will be put down. Frown

One of the saddest things ever. Made me remember watching the Ruffian/Foolish Pleasure match race. Have to wonder how great Barbaro might have been.

R.I.P. Barbaro

Here in the US, the population sent large donations, gifts, flowers, etc. to the New Bolton Center at U of Penn, where Barbaro was treated.
He was humanely euthanized yesterday. It made all of the network news shows.

Thousands of miles away, a Hamas terrorist blew himself up in the Israeli resort city of Eilat, where people go to lie on the beach and relax.
Hamas praised his death and the fact that he was able to kill 3 Israelis and wound some as well.

In Baghdad, according to the Associated Press- "Assailants struck Shiite worshippers in three Iraqi cities Tuesday, killing at least 36 people in bombings and ambushes during the climax of ceremonies marking Ashoura, the holiest day in the Shiite calendar".

We have such different value systems it is difficult to see how negotiation can be accomplished. Frown

The horse fought and got the best that modern veterinary medicine can provide. Those leg injuries are scary. Just think of the lost stud fees for the owners. Truly sad.
