I got to experience a dream day of golf by getting to play the "hallowed" Winged Foot West Course recently. For us golf fanatics, playing a place like WF is as good as it gets. After all, this course has hosted five US Opens (including the 29 edition won by Bobby Jones), a US Amateur and a PGA.

The entire atmosphere of the club was great. I was expecting a stuffy attitude (after all, most of the members are really rich), but it had the feel of a normal golf club. It was the way golf is supposed to be, which is all about the golf. There are no golf carts, cart girls, mobile phones or any such nonsense as only walking is allowed.

As you may surmise, the golf course is extremely difficult, which is surprising due to the lack of water hazards. There is an endless array of 420 to 440 yard par fours. The par threes are 190 yard plus excepting the 7th hole. Only the par fives are somewhat reasonable (I was in the right front greenside bunker in two shots on two of them).

The green complexes are the basis of the greatness of WF. The greens are narrow, sloping from back to front and guarded by deep bunkers.
Do not get above the hole because you cannot stop the ball within two putt range. Most bunker shots require elevation of five to six feet to these narrow, sloping greens. If you do not have a reasonable short game, you will take five to six shots per hole. I had six pars and still shot 91, and I am very happy with this score.

In summary, WF is every bit its reputation as a great course in the world. There is not one bad hole on the course.

I would move up at least one tee box considering I'm a 25 handicap on the public courses here in Mpls. Big Grin
