I really do not think people (me) truly understand the greatness of Mariano Rivera, and what we have witnessed for the last 14 years.
Best ever. And from all accounts, an admirable man.

If I never see Jason Varitek catching a game for the Red Sox again I will be completely fine with that.
Great pitching matchup yesterday - I know these games are, in terms of playoff implications, fairly meaningless but it's tough to see a lineup with Baldelli, Lowrie and Anderson at the bottom of the order.
Encouraging outing from Dice-K, though.
Paul Byrd tonight. Ugh.

He's as fine as ever, even though he rarely hits 94 mph anymore. His 91 mph cut fastball is still mostly unhittable. quote: Originally posted by MiamiWineNovice: Encouraging outing from Dice-K, though.
He pitched his way out of trouble several times, like that bases loaded/no out situation. It's the mark of a good pitcher. Andy Pettitte pitches a lot like that, though Pettitte's fastball can't match Dice-K's.
Paul Byrd tonight. Ugh.
Don't give up on him. Two days ago, when Joba started against Lester, I figured the Yankees didn't have a chance.
Just one more sip.

Even as a sox fan I can't argue that. Anyone who cares about baseball gets it just as I'd guess anyone who plays the game hates to hear Enter Sandman start playing.

Is Hells Bells that easily forgotten? Maybe I'm just being a homer here since I've seen Hoffman pitch alot more than Rivera, but I'd put Hoffman in his prime up against Rivera in his prime and expect to see alot of zeros and not much to differentiate the two.

Yeah, Mariano is a class act, unlike the huffing and puffing hotdog Papelbon. Pregame show's about to start.
Just one more sip.

That's pretty funny considering he'll be wearing pinstripes in a couple years. Don't forget to roll out your big book or filthy yet classy jokes for your friends.

Hoff is a hall of famer, no doubt. Still, when the totality of careers is added up, I take Rivera. If I owned a team I be happy to have Hoff, but still happier with Mo.

I completely agree. Both are HOF's for sure. For me, right or wrong, it is always about the postseason in pro sports, thus Mo is above reproach.

I agree, which unfortunately is what kills Hoffman in these discussions having played most of his career for a team that could reach post-season play only 4 times during his 16 years here. Now whether Hoff could have handled playing in NY and the high expectations in post-season play is debatable, but best left for philosophers and sports talk radio hosts.
