So far, the US Men's Basketball team looked good against Lithuania and Canada this week. Great one-on-one defense but transition D can get better. Offense is clicking although it still needs work against the zone defense. I don't know who the better competition will be. So far so good.

They are shooting over 65% (64% against Lithuania). I think the offense is fine, the defense just needs some more effort.

Hopefully when the games start they will get more intense on defense which I think they will. Anything less than gold will be quite embarrasing considering the talent.

Sure, on paper, with our US myopia, our NBA stars should crush all, but the game has changed. The World is no longer intimidated, and there are some bad dudes out there who we've never heard of, who can flat out shoot the lights out, with crazy defensive skillz. Also, don't underestimate the will of the rest of the world to humiliate Americans at "our" game, especially given politics today.

What did you say?

Anyone else watched this game live (much) earlier this morning? It was a very entertaining and nail-biting game if you were rooting for either team. I'm glad the US was able to pull it off despite an excellent Spanish effort. It reminded me of the Georgetown v. Villanova NCAA championship game except for the different outcome. I thought the game was going to be at least a 15 point deficit by halftime for Spain. But to Spain's credit, they kept attacking in the second half, made their baskets, and almost played a perfect game.

Additional thoughts:
1) the US still has the best talent in the world but you can't just put a team together for one summer and expect to win;

2) the US can no longer field a college-only team either and expect any medals;

3) besides the US coaches and Colangelo having smiles on their faces, I would say that the biggest grin is probably from David Stern's face, knowing that a lot of these international stars will be playing in the NBA this season or shortly thereafter.

4) Spain's got some talented players who can shoot from the outside, dribble and penetrate, and post up. Did you see that 17-year old play? Pretty good already and just needs an outside shot.

If you are a basketball fan and missed this game, I would definitely look for the rebroadcast.

Indybob was so, like right on the money with his predictions. I mean like, the crazy skillz of the other teams were like, dope. They so humiliated the United States, in light of world politics. Roll Eyes Razz

You're pretty sensitive there, IB. Can't take a little good natured ribbing? Oh well, it must be your time of the month.

I love how you go digging through this thread to carefully make a quote stack of my witticisms, and post them with glee, like you've just discovered the Lindbergh baby. Equally comical and pathetic.

And you, cdr. Can you read? Seriously, can you? Because if you could, you'd have seen all the poignant pro-US olympian commentary I've been typing on "the real" Olympic thread. Have fun in Denver!

How's that for good natured ribbing? Big Grin Popcorn

Actually more fun to watch the final game than anticipated. Spain shot about 60% for the game and still lost the game by 11 points. WOW.

Glad to see the USA develop more of a team concept. Not an easy thing to do with today's high priced talent. Kudos to Coach K and his staff.

Poignant pro-U.S. Olympian commentary indeed - take your comments at the beginning of this thread as your finest example.

You're just running for cover since the United States dominated. Don't lie - you would be joyous had some turd world country or some European group of femboys sent our team packing early.

How is posting on this thread running for cover? Your thick skull might not realize it, but I'm happy the US men won gold and (this is important) behaved in a responsible way that puts our country in a good light. Jason Kidd showing up to support a big fan in Misty May's volleyball run, and Kobe doing a great job with the locals, is what we need in the USA. I've been courtside for some ugly performances by our NBA players against international competition, and in 2002, and again in 2004, they did nothing but pout, and further many people's opinion that they are "ugly" Americans.
You're part of the mindset that wants to bomb the F' out of the rest of the world, but sometimes, goodwill helps out our interests more in the long run.

And, European femboys? Huh? You get stoopider with each post cdr, you really do, and even more trolltastic than ever.

Indy,

You seem like such a good hearted guy. I shouldn't tease you the way I do. Don't get worked up over what a guy like me says. I'm just here for entertainment.

Indy,

I’m always gleeful – it’s just the way I am. As for you; you’ve got some serious anger issues. I would suggest you get yourself some therapy. And labeling others here as trolls? That’s the pot calling the kettle black, isn’t it?
