I need to get a wedding gift for a friend and her registry has been picked over. She and her fiance are budding wine lovers. I'd like to get them a GC at a good store either in Manhattan, where she works, or near their home in Brooklyn.

Can someone please recommend a suitable spot?

Many thanks.

A GC is a good idea but have you heard about the wine chime toasting bar? We first saw it at the Flynn Fine Wine & Food Festival in Shelburne, Vermont. There was one on each table at the premiere tasting dinner, and they went like hot cakes at the auction fundraiser after the event. People loved them! We also saw them in the NapaStyle catalog, but they've sold out. Check out [link deleted]. Just an idea. Good luck!

Sherry Lehman on 679 Madison Avenue is a great spot, as is Chambers on... you guessed it, Chambers Street. Heres a few other:

Garnet on Lex and 79th?
Astor on Lafayette and W4th Street

Avoid;
Crossroads
Union Square Wines on 4th amd 13th

It depends upon where in Brooklyn you are going. In Park Slope there is Red, White and Bubbly. A great shop with a wide diversity. Another good one is Smith and Vine on Smith Street in Carrol Gardens.

For Manhattan there is Morrel by St Patricks cathedral, as well as ACker Merril on the Upper West Side

Also check out, and Tbird will definately agree..

Slope Cellars, 7th avenue between 13th and 14th st.

Prospect Wine Shop 7th avenue between 8th and 9th st.

And Big Nose Full Body 7th ave between 11th and 12th st..

Most of these places have wine in the $10.00 to $50.00 price range..So if you are looking for something more expensive try Red, White, and Bubbly..

Een,

Give Smith & Vine a call, they are located in Brooklyn. Just got a nice write-up in Food & Wine magazine, here is the link to the article.

Disclaimer...I used to work with the owner, Patrick Watson.

And please don't overlook my neighborhood favorite:

Burgundy Wine Co. on West 26th 'tween Sixth & Seventh.

Name pretty much explains itself.

Morrell Wine at Rockefeller plaza is great, my favorite. It is a ride, but Wine Library in Springfield NJ is great too. Mentioned them twice today, hmmm, NO, I am not on the payroll.

I'm curious as to the comment about Union Square Wines being a shop to avoid. They are my standby near my office when i need something quick and have been good to me. Is it price, or is there something else I should know. thanks.

The same 67 chain is in S. FL and I depise that store. They have good prices on the cheap, mass volume stuff, but on anything worth drinking, it's stale and way overpriced. I stopped in a couple of weeks ago for the first time in about a year and it was just as I remembered, plenty of 2001 CA chardonnays and SB, 1993 and 1997 Bordeaux's and 2000 CA cabs on the high side of current release prices. Blech! I'm sure the NYC store must be way better as I don't think they could survive in Manhattan with that kind of inventory. Don't know how they do it here.

I agree with vinole, as least as far as the Federal Highway store in Boca is concerned. None of the better bottlings were there and the store was a bit warm. I visited it a couple of times and haven't been back in years.

Just one more sip.
