I was going through some old tapes (remember those) this morning and ran across a Dread Zeppelin recording.

DZep are a Reggae band who covers (mostly) Led Zeppelin tunes and has an Elvis impersonator as a lead singer (fat lounge singer Elvis, not slim young Elvis). I saw them in the early 90s on my college campus, and the live show features a guy named Charlie Haj who's sole job is to stand onstage with an armful of towels for Tortelvis (singer) to mop his brow with. Fun show.

My vote for strangest band. Others?

I always found it strange that Weird Al sells as many records/concerts as he does. I could not imagine putting that CD in my car.

It's because many folks like his parodies even better than the original songs.
See White & Nerdy for example.

Weird Al Jankovic is living proof that anyone can make it America.

I can only imagine how many house party hosts in the 80's and 90's thought to put his songs on to really "get the party going" and get everyone laughing. Big Grin

So we have a front runner? Friggin' Weird Al???

C'mon people, you can do better:

How about Caninus??? A death metal band fronted by two pit bulls. http://www.myspace.com/caninus You might want to turn the volume down if you don't don't work in a tattoo parlor, head shop, or aren't trying to figure out how to hide your new forked tongue from your folks.

Unquestionably. Trout Mask Replica is still the most bizarre album I've ever heard.

The Flaming Lips are a few brain cells short of sanity, although age has tempered them.

Big Grin Agreed. Strange in that I can't understand why anybody can listen to them. They sound like a bunch of chimps that happen upon musical instruments one day. This from a guy who "gets" Ornette Coleman and The Mars Volta.

zwine beat me to it. Gwar is crazy in concert, go for the entertainment not the music. As far as indybob reference to the grateful dead sounding like a bunch of chimps, seriously???

good mentions already. strange, but i never found dread zeppelin "strange"...i liked them. but i guess i'm assuming strange isn't good...??

rhino bucket just sucks. nothing strange about that.

so does insane clown posse.

gwar too.

and slipknot.

and the mentors.

i see the loose trend here. bands that suck.

i guess i am blanking on "strange" bands.. i'm gonna hit the bong and the ipod and see if something develops.

news at 11.

TBird,
Big Grin. You've got 36 more minutes "in the oven." Be safe in there.
.
"Strange" is individual, but I guess I mean "bizarre, in a gimicky way." Dread Zep and Caninus fit the bill for me.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum beat everything listed hands down, as does their previous incarnation Idiot Flesh.

GWAR is an experience for sure, but I don't know why anyone would buy an album. Funniest GWAR moment was when Dave did an interview with Laura Kightlinger (sp?) on the Daily Show, in full costume, playing golf and riding around in the cart.

Dread Zeppelin was fun, but not that strange. There are plenty of odd cover bands out there. Mandonna anyone?

Damn, you win. I just checked out this number: Clicky. I'd swear Albert Hofmann was taunting me from the grave. I'm not sure how I'm going to get to sleep in a couple of hours.

Still, I'm tellin' ya, Caninus is a top three. Checked out Mandonna. Damn! Check out Lez Zeppelin too. I bought one of their albums a while back, and while it's gimicky, it rocks hard.
