I am privileged and proud to be American. Our young men and women are serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. They will not be at the malls, nor will they be at the family barbeques. These young men and women are similar to others who served in the past in our Armed Forces; brave men and women with extraordinary courage. I honor and thank them this Memorial Day Weekend.

I will toast to all of them at a family dinner tonight. We often forget that these guys (and gals) allow us to celebrate
our freedoms (including wine.)
Thanks for this post!

While I never served my youngest sister just finished her second tour in Iraq, also did one in Kosovo. I know my mother is very glad that she got out safe. She made the mistake of thinking she was not going back and told her that she didn't just sit in front of a computer all day, but in fact often drove the lead Humvee on patrol.

I work in a VA hospital.

This is a day to remember those who died in service, but I would like to draw attention to those who did not. Many of the vets I see are battling physical and mental illness, homelessness and addiction. Many served in Vietnam and the Gulf and it is important that we ensure that the latest wave of men and women to go into battle get the services they need long after they've returned. If you can, volunteer at a hospital, give your time to help a vet put together a resume and find a job.

Well stated Een. Mental health is a huge key to returning vets. People don't realize the magnatude of how this can cripple if no help is available.

We are going to watch Saving Private Ryan tonight. I watch it every Memorial Day with my wife and children.

This is a great day to remember and salute the greatest symbol and protector of freedom in the world - The American Soldier.
