Why the hell I am taking up sides for Steinbrenner is beyond me....
But, in the "Contributors" category of the HOF, Steinbrenner does have a place. He put his $$ on the line to build a winner. While I might not like the "Evil Empire", I do respect that what he wanted more than anything is to build a winner.... As for the Giants moves, no need to kid. I am loving the thought of Durham, Aurilia, Molina, Vizquel, Roberts, Winn..... Romeo and Juliet are together in eternity.... |

He put his money on the line, so what, each owner does don't they? Sure, he spends more now. The Yankees did have a stretch of horrible years under him too. The man was banned from baseball for life for using that same money to undermine the integrity of the game and skrew his own players over. That isn't behavior to reward. The man was convicted on federal charges and required a presidential pardon again for getting in trouble with that same money. If shoeless Joe and Pete Rose can't be in the hall Steinbrenner never should be. And please don't tell me he deserves to be in more than those two. I don't think people understand just how self serving and manipulative the man is making moves with careless disregard for the integrity of the game and for the law. |

I absolutely believe that Joe Jackson and Pete Rose belong in the HOF - and yes, they are more deserving than Steinbrenner. But I do think that argument is apples and oranges.... But Bowie Kuhn is in the HOF!!! Marvin Miller is not??? Steinbrenner has a place there.... Romeo and Juliet are together in eternity.... |

I will stay neutral as to whether Steinbrenner deserves HOF status or not, but I do think that he should be held to a higher standard, simply because he is in a high revenue market. With that kind of revenue, he should have a large pocketbook, which of course will enable him to sign many of the best players. I am much more impressed with what St. Louis has done, relative to their budget, than the Yankees. If you think Steinbrenner could make Milwaukee or KC perennial contenders, then put him in the hall of fame, otherwise, I'm not so sure.

Ugh, don't get me started. Maybe we should save him a seat in the hall as well. If the same standard applied to Steinbrenner is applied to him it is difficult to argue against the results right? Baseball is making more money, greater revenue, greater market share, and is bigger than ever. Who cares if he sold baseballs soul? |

I thought I heard a lot of cheers. Maybe we hear what we want to hear. Were there lot's of cheers when Obama bowled a 37 this weekend? He probably couldn't even reach home plate with a pitch. Santana looked good today. At least there's one ace in New York. |

I did not want to hear the president booed, I was suprised at just how intense the boos were. A quick youtube search comes up with the video and you can hear the mixed reaction from the crowd. The boos also looked like they really got to Bush, you can see it in his demeaner and how quickly he gets the hell out of there. |

Actually Glenn, the Yankees have 1 WS ring since 2000 (vs the Mets). As for spending money like drunken sailors, I have no shame in that. I encourage the Yankees to keep on spending! I'll gladly give you that point. The Yankees have been spending more than other teams since they have been in existence and will continue to spend more under the current system. They have 26 Championships. |

Yeah we don't want a president who couldn't throw the ball to home plate |

Today, Zito, our opening day pitcher, could not throw a pitch over 84 mph and those did not have any movement. Right now the company line is likely that he will have fewer walks this year, sadly only because the opponents will be hitting the heck out of the ball against Zito.
Right now, for some reason, the only thing I am hearing is Al Bundy's voice repeating "Oh dear Mother of God" over and over and it is only day one of a 162 game schedule. Heard that the betting line in Vegas for the Giants is 72 wins and the under is looking pretty good right now. Not sure what the line is for total number of shutouts but we got our first one today losing to the Dodgers, 5-0. I think we got 5 hits, all singles, two of those by Rowan. Oh dear Mother of God!!!!!!!!!! |

Nice 126 million investment in Zito. I doubt he cares, just counts his cash. At least Rowand is on my fantasy team, he is the only offense the Giants have. |

Regarding the boos, Bush was in Washington, DC. Not exactly known for conservative views or classy residents. Santana looked good yesterday. As a Mets fan, it feels good to have a starter who you can count on every 5 days. Last September, when the Mets started tanking, no pitcher stepped up to pitch a big game. Now, the Mets have that guy. |

I was wondering how many posts it would take in this little debate before you reached for the 26 Championships. And it’s a good point to use because from that standpoint, the Yankee’s have dominated without question. Just to clarify, I don’t have a problem with the Yankee’s spending more money than anyone else. I wish the Dodgers spent more for sure. And I hate the argument from fans of small market teams that they cannot compete with the Yankee’s because they don’t have enough money. The reason your team doesn’t have money is because no one goes to the games!!! If your city supported the team, they would support you back in most cases. My point was the Yankee’s have not spent their millions very wisely lately, long term contracts to aging veterans, pitchers with a lot of baggage, etc. |

I agree with your statement to some extent. My perspective is that their spending in the past 15 years (1993 - 2008) is a hundred times better than their spending 15 years prior (1978 - 1993), let alone giving away the young talent (McGriff, Buhner, etc.) for bums. I mean real BUMS. |

Moreno had a good start with the franchise, but has quickly gone down hill from there. First changing the name to the LA Angels was ridiculous, then not going out and getting a bat to support Vlad a couple of years ago when they had a chance to be great. Now he is handing out crazy contracts to Gary Matthews $50M and Torii Hunter $90M!!!! Those contracts seem like he is trying to make up for past sins. |

I don't need to search youtube, I saw it live and then on sportscenter. I did hear boos, but to me it wasn't like he was booed off the field, that's all. I'm sure the boos came from classless left wingers as mentioned above. You don't have to like the guy but you should respect the office. Back to actual baseball, I'm waiting for my Red Sox to play the triple A's tonight and hopefully get me one step closer to my bottle of shiraz from Wine Wizard. |

The contracts aren't as crazy as you think. Look at what has happened to the market. If they did not get that cash from the Angels they would have gotten it somewhere else. The Angels didn't get into bidding wars over free agents who cost even more than these two. You are looking at Moreno the wrong way though. He cut ticket prices and prices at the concession stands while spending more for players. He isn't greedy, he has a better understanding of the little guy trying to come to the ballpark and enjoy the game with his family. I hated the LAA idea but he won. He also got tons of attention for the club and has tapped the LA audience. When the dodgers stink, many of their fans end up watching the Angels. It is not as stupid as it seemed, the Angels just signed a huge contract with Fox Sports to show Angels games in orange and LA county. |

I don’t know sticky2, 5 years at $90M seems pretty crazy to me considering he will be 37-38 when the contract is done. He is already showing a decline defensively and he has never been a consistent offensive player worthy of that kind of deal. Plus you just signed at CF in Matthews last season. So now you have 2 CF’s that are over 32 that you owe a combined $130M. I just didn’t understand those moves. I will say to everyone that is quick to diminish the LA/OC fan base that the Dodgers drew $3.8M last year and the Angels $3.3M. That’s a lot of support for 2 teams that are about a 30 minute drive apart (without traffic). The fans might leave the games early to beat traffic, but they do show up for their teams. |

3-2 Yankees beat Halladay, though the Yankees' third run was a gift.
Just one more sip. |

I thought this was interesting.
Clicky My Tigers have launched into the top 3, spending almost 50% more than last year. So far, they're 0-1 against KC, and on pace to finish 162 games behind Cleveland. ------------------- "Believe in NOW!!" -- Slogan of the 2008 Detroit Lions (sic) |
