Sorry Board-O, but I must continue.... WW - Yes you are correct, and that has been the Giants model. Draft arms, and trade those arms for position players, or other vets. Or sign free agents. The "problem" is that they were always trying to win "now" - because of Bonds. They did mortgage the future. Unfortunately, it will take some time to get back on track.... Romeo and Juliet are together in eternity.... |

Good point Dom. Sabean will get the Giants back on track now that Mr. Personality Plus is gone, however he did make a bad deal with the Twins a few years ago, Francisco Liriano is GOOD!@!!

I don't think they realized what a pr!ck AJ Pr!ckzynski was going to be..... And yes, Liriano is really good. And it would be nice to have Nathan back too.... Romeo and Juliet are together in eternity.... |

Even Guiliani doesn't act like he would have blown Mickey Mantle if he had the chance like the other two. "...just seeing those broad shoulders and hearing that crack of the bat during batting practice..." |

The "broad shoulder" description is perplexing. Costas probably would have loved a "reach around" from Mantle. |

Why do I hate A-Rod? I wouldn't say I hate him, as pointed out I'm just stating the facts. But for the sake of argument who is this quote from... "The Yankees lost with A-Rod the last four years. He is just not worth the money. I would like to see the Yankees trim payroll by at least 50 mill I believe though spoiled, the 21st century Yankee fan appreciates home grown talent. See ya A-Rod!!" Jilted lover or just no love lost there? I really couldn't have summed it up much better than that. He's a cancer and a hired mercenary that follows the biggest buck. I don't like players in any sport who just want the absolute biggest contract they can possibly get. He drags down every team he plays with for some unknown reason. How many other lock first ballot hall of famers did that? Not just never won a championship, but had teams actually dramatically improve after he left like Seattle and Texas did. When he was possibly comming to Boston I thought it might be because he took up a huge portion of the payroll and the teams couldn't field a supporting cast but that hasn't been the case in NY and he's still the biggest post season choke artist I've ever seen. Hitless in his last 18 post season at bats with runners in scoring position and terrible in the late innings. That alone however, as long as he's not on my team, doesn't make me dislike him. If he wants to chase every last cent and never win that's his choice. The dirty cheap stuff he does that a player of his caliber shouldn't do is bush league and that's the type of thing that really gets me. Yelling "mine" or "I got it" while running behind fielders on the bases and slapping at Bronson Arroyo in the ALCS a few years ago. Give me a break, he's good enough to not need to do that stuff, yet he just can't help himself for some reason. If by some miracle and the law of averages he does explode and lead the Yankee's to a championship or two "The House that A-Rod built" doesn't have quite the same ring as "The House that Ruth built". Even if he did it's pitching that wins championships, not hitting. Unless the young guns for the Yanks really develop quickly I think the rest of the team will be washed up has-beens by the time they are ready to be contenders. |

Schilling loves the limelight, doesn't chase every last cent or he would have left Boston this year and most importantly he thrives in big games. I don't recall any cheap tricks up his sleeve either but maybe you can refresh me.
A-Rod is 0 for his last 18 with runners in scoring position. He was also 0-for-7 after the 6th inning in games 4 through 7 of the Yanks historic collapse against Boston in '04. Shilling's post season stats? Lets see he's 11-2, with a 2.23 ERA, in his 19 postseason trips to the mound. He's 4-1, 2.06, in seven career World Series starts and he's 6-1, 3.28, in eight postseason starts for the Red Sox. Three World Series rings and one co-MVP. I see the similarity now |

ugghhh, don't remind me about the trades with the White Sox. I wonder where they would have been without that trade. They got Nathan, Liriano and Pierckzynski (sp?) back for nothing really. Plus, you can't count on pitching and defense with the Giants. While it may have been their M.O. to draft pitching and trade for talent, their pitching hasn't exactly panned out. See Jerome Williams, Kurt Ainsworth and Jesse Foppert. We're not guaranteed good pitching with Cain and Lincecum. Also, their defense isn't exactly sound. With Aurilia at 3rd, Durham at 2nd, a hurt Vizquel with no real replacement and a ~30 year old rookie first basemen, their infield isn't going to be stopping much. Plus, it's not likely they'll see any great hitting talent any time soon, with players taking less money to play elsewhere (see Gary Matthews), it will be a long time before the Giants are competetive again. It's not like they can trade for draft picks, and even if they do trade one of their 2 decent prospects for hitting, then they won't have the pitching. I hate to say it because I am a die hard fan and I will still be in the stands, but the Giants aren't going to be good for a while, and I don't blame Barry. |

You don't read very well. The subject you broached was "washed up has-beens," not past accomplishments. Just one more sip. |

Good point. On the surface it would seem a collosal contradiction on my part, however I made those statements when he and his agent were playing games with the Yankee front office and ownership. When he changed his tune, I changed mine. As of today A-Rod has not delivered in crunch time, much like the Red Sox did for over 70 years. If the Sox can end over 70 years of futility in one season, why can't A-Rod end only 5 or 6 years of non playoff performance? |

You got me there. All I remembered writing was about A-Rod and never re-read the last part. That said, Schilling probably is washed up with the latest injury but we'll see. He still got the job done last post season even if it wasn't vintage Schilling. The Red Sox got rid of 70 years of losing by changing everything from the owners down to the bat boys and how things were run in Boston. How is A-Rod going to change everything about himself and become a clutch performer unless he befriends Jeter again and follows his lead? 2008 ALCS - Red Sox/Tigers NLCS - Mets/Dodgers World Series - Tigers beat the Mets |

While I don't like A-rod very much, and this has more to do with his attitude than anything else, I think a post-season turn around is highly likely. Not by the law of averages, because that doesn't mean anything in this context, but because it is obvious his problem is mental. It is undisputable that he is a great ballplayer. That is what great players do, they make adjustments, he wouldn't be where he is if he wasn't able to make adjustments. While I may puke myself if he does adjust himself, I think it's easy to see that it is more likely that he will make the adjustment he needs, especially given the high probability that he will play many more playoff games. The more opportunities he has to adjust means the more likely it is that he will, unfortunately.
It's difficult to compare this with the adjustment Boston made to get where they are, and for the exact reason Icewino stated in his previous post. Boston had to make changes from top to bottom, and they all had to pan out. There are a lot of moving parts that needed to be adjusted with them in order to win a championship, but with A-rod, it's just one moving piece, his mind. If he corrects it, he can turn around. |

Clearly Jeter knows how to deal with the pressure from both fans and media in New York. Maybe he has some good advice for A-Rod, like embrace and make friends with them or something, that's all. If the media liked him would the story about him and the sripper have ever made the papers? That stuff happens all the time but never gets written up. As was stated above his problems are clearly mental, he is a supremely gifted player physically and when there's no pressure to perform he's one of if not the best hitter ever. Maybe he will come around, Peyton Manning was in the same boat way back to his college days and he did.

That has to be one of the worst trades in recent memory, especially if Liriano comes back after surgery. But the worst trade in the last 20 years (at least for us Dodger fans) – Pedro Martinez to the Expos for effing Delino DeShields. Makes me sick every time I think about it. “What is the soup du jour?"...It’s the soup of the day..."Mmmm, that sounds good, I’ll have that” - Lloyd Christmas |

BUT.... what they have done with those arms is trade them to win now. Ainsworth for Jason Schmidt, for example. I think that worked out pretty well.... Romeo and Juliet are together in eternity.... |

True, but are they going to trade Cain and Lincecum or keep them to build around? That is what I am pondering. If they keep the kids like everyone wants, and they end up being the Ainsworth/Williams/Foppert how are the Giants going to be any good? Or, if they trade them for hitting/fielding talent, who is going to pitch for them and what will the fans say? Now that I am thinking about it, it might be good if the Giants trades one of them to get some decent hitting/fielding considering how difficult it has been to sign a good hitting free agent given the pitcher friendly nature of AT&T. |

I am hoping that Zito will have a GREAT year this year so we can trade him to a team in contention for some young prospects that CAN HIT while we get rid of his ridiculous contract at the same time giving the Giants some money to make a move at some hitters and position players while keeping the young pitchers on the team. Thank you for not interrupting, as that was a really nice dream. If only that could actually happen.
