I bought a mixed case of 1982 First Growths from a divorcee who was selling wines her husband had left in the cellar. The wines were bought on release and stored in a natural underground cellar until I acquired them. You never know!

Maybe Holly's ex-husband gave her a little nooky nooky and she went running back into his arms...meanwhile, ex-husband gathers up his wine while she is asleep and takes off.
If this were really a divorce sale, the best thing for the wife to do to stick it to the ex- is to have the wine appraised at FULL auction value and add it as an asset to the community property balance sheet. Then you'd get the value of the wine in additional property settlement AND your ex- would essentially buy the wine twice, the second time at the fully appreciated aged cellar value. Might even add a little bitter taste each time he opened a bottle.
This actually happened to a friend of mine. Paid twice for his golf initiation fee too!

The whole thing is fishy for a couple of reasons. In a divorce where the marital assests will be split, what is the purpose of selling off the assets at a discount? You are cheating yourself out of good money. If the spouse did not care about wine and just wanted to hit the spouse where it hurt, I would think the more customary response would be to just dump the wine down the drain and leave the empty bottles lying around, or smashing them to smithereens. Or if the goal really is to sell them quick, one has only to go to the local wine shop with the cases and ask "what will you give me for these beauties, and take the cash".
I'll take the over.

A friend went through an acrimonius dissolution and came through with cellar intact. Ex-wife reported to the State of Washington Dept. of Revenue that her ex had brought in many, many cases of California wine without paying state taxes. The state did an audit and hit him up with the tax, interest, and penalties. That amounted to more than what he had paid for the wine in the first place. He should have just split the wine.
OK. You legalists and moralists are going to say that he should have reported the wine to the State of Washington and paid the taxes when he brought it home. I'll be amazed if one person here says that they do that in their own state.
Even better, pur them all into a new plastic garbage can, throw in some fruit, and invite the neighbors over for sangria.

I have a theory as to where this relationship went bad.
It was probably at night, most likely during a full moon. Hubby probably couldn't take the small stubby wings protruding from the shoulder blades and the long sharp black claws growing out of the toes and fingers.
The clincher was probably Heather flying around the room scratching at his face and eyes screeching "Aaaack......Aaaack...... I'm a harpy.... I'm a harpy..."

OK. Be amazed. I do that on all of our out of state purchases (books, clothes, art, wine, etc.) where sales tax wasn't charged locally. New York State added a line for this for the 2004 tax year and woke a bunch of people up.
Reminds me of my favorite line relating to complaints about taxes on e-commerce transactions, "Do you want the virtual firetruck to come to your house?"
