Hello,

My girlfriend and I went out to dinner last night, and on a whim I ordered the 2003 Poliziano Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2003. We both loved it, and I'd really like to buy some for home. None of my local wine shops carry it, so I turned to the web. The only site that I could find selling this wine is here. I added a bottle to my shopping cart, but I noticed the shipping charge is $24! I thought that seemed really high, but like I said I've never ordered wine online before. Is that a reasonable shipping charge to ship to NY?

Wow!
I just spent the same amount shipping 5 bottles, and thought that was way too much! I've always figured my purchases to be around $2-$3 per bottle, as they've always averaged out being right in that range. I was
told that it was the size of my box, although; I've never heard that before. (Don't even think about it, Guy's!!)
I assumed it was based on weight only, and went overboard trying to protect the items; not realizing I was adding to the cost. I sure do like that bubble wrap, though! Whoever invented that was a genius! My cat and I, think that stuff almost justifies the additional packaging costs!
However, unless these guys have real serious "bubble wrap" issues; something is terribly wrong with their pricing! If it were my $24, I would investigate further. You might want to call them Monday, and ask, (someone in charge)why the heck it cost so much?

I always find the shipping a deal breaker. You need to shop around, or increase the quantity.

Check

wine-searcher.com
winezap.com
wineaccess.com

I checked and I thin you found them in DC.
Look around for the best deal.

K&L has them for $19.99

http://www.klwines.com/find/search.asp?w=Poliziano+&ob=an&wr=e&submit=Go

Shipping seems reasonable. 1 bottle from $12.91, or4 bottles for $25.86

Generally speaking I've found you need to do a half-case to justify shipping.

My answer was going to be - always order by the case for the best shipping rate. However, I went to the CW website and checked shipping. Their rates are twice as high as I'm used to paying.

As others have said - shop around.

Be careful about shipping costs of futures. Here is a transcript of what just happened to me with zachys (nice that they'll email it to you for your records)

Garret> Hello, how may I help you?

zach> Hi...I just checked my visa bill online and there is a charge from zachys posted on 11/02/06 for $16.50. What is this charge?

Garret> Please hold a moment while I check for you...

Garret> It is a shipping charge on what looks to be 8 bottles from hold.

zach> That's what I thought, But I am charged shipping with each purchase I make. So why is there an additional shipping charge?

Garret> It was determined that shipping had not been paid on these items

zach> I am looking at my slips and it was paid. Which wine is showing no shipping charged?

Garret> I can double check this for you
Garret> let me check
Garret> order #125000304 for '03 Bordeaux...
Garret> also order #135006138, for mixed wines...

zach> How is that at all possible??? all of these were online purchases. It's impossible to check out of your site without being charged shipping???? How could I have possibly ordered these without paying shipping?

Garret> I do find shipping paid on the majority of the order
Garret> Then there was an omision in the record keeping and when the orders were split between in stock and pre arrival it was not noted that the shipping had been paid OR
Garret> ship was only paid on the in stock portions
Garret> I will investigate and refund any double charge

zach> All I know is no matter what happened on your end, there is no way I could have placed the order without paying for shipping AND I am charged shipping even when a wine isn't in stock - so whether they are instock or not, I'm still charged shipping

Calvert Woodley is a good store, but that shipping charge is nuts. Annoying.

If you ever plan get out to DC, buy it and have them hold it for pickup.

A nice online wine store with reasonable shipping is Gary's Wine & Marketplace located in New Jersey. I do agree that most places hurt their business with very high shipping.

Also, some online retailers charge extra for shipping containers (styrofoam shippers)while others don't. You should ask about this first before placing the order. That way, you can factor in per bottle cost between different companies.

K&L seems fair with their shipping rates, and they don't charge extra for shippers.

I am an online retailer located in the Northwest. Shipping one bottle to N.Y going ground is about six bucks plus 2 bucks for wine shipper total 8 bucks. I would have to say 24 dollars is a wee bit out of line.
