wine...owe,

I've also used winecommune, but only to sell small lots and no purchasing at all.

I much prefer purchasing on winebid as they do go through every single bottle of wine that goes on their auction. Although you can't be 100% sure on how the wine is handled, but at least I have the assurance of they took the time and do their best on that department.

Here is a thread of discussion regarding winebid a little more than a year ago.

As for the final hammer price, I've find that even after including tax and commission, I can often find more bargain on winebid vs. winecommune, at least on the items I am interested in. The most recent example being the 2001 Barnett SMD Cabernet Sauvignon, which I won at $35 per bottle, after figuring in the tax and commission, it was just $43 and change vs. $60 from the winery.

I've not sold wines through winebid, but if I had a good amount of collection to sell, I can see how it would be easier to do so through them. There is no worries about collecting money from buyers and checking the shipping law to all different states.

Hope this helps.

BirDungy,

I don't have a good answer for you regarding the .uk site. To the best of my knowledge is that winebid used to have an physical office in UK but has since closed. We are still working with a couple of brokers out there to source wines.

Once I officially start working for the company, I will try to dig up some new information.

pyang, thanks for the info. I've never sold a bottle of wine, but just last week decided I might part with a couple bottles of '97 Dominus. I started checking out winecommune, then called my local UPS location to check on shipping - looks like they won't ship wine unless I have a license (I did not check FedEx yet). They suggested shipping via USPS without disclosing contents (seems odd they would recommend this!). Will winebid accept shipments from sellers that are not legally able to ship? I'm curious if other forumites run into this problem and how they solve it. I also can't find styro shipping containers anywhere in town so I need to wait until I get some more from wine I buy.

Pyang,
Okay, so now I've found yet another way to spend too much money. I think I've got a pretty good idea of the differences between WC and WB. In addition, I've now become a buyer on WB. Just bought:
95 Haut Brion
95 Margaux
96 Mondavi 30th anniv. cab
96 Shafer HSS
(1996 was my wedding year)

You can tell WB that you've already impacted their P&L.

Regards,

Mike

wine...owe,

I apologize for not catching your thread from last week. I am pretty sure that winebid will accept shipment from MN, but not quite sure how the logistic would all work out. However, there is a minimum reserve value of $2,500 for the wines you are interested in selling through winebid.

Have fun finding good buys on winebid, it can become addicting. Just don't let your better half see the credit card bill. Wink
