I've recently had a spate of incidents in which my credit card number has been compromised. I get the call from my cc company and they ask about all kinds of weird charges. It's a pain. They cancel your card, send you a new one, etc. Anyway, when it happens once, you're pissed, and wonder where they got your info. When it happens again...

I had setup an account at winebid.com and had bought a few items. Then this happened. I don't use this credit card a whole lot, so upon getting the new number, I updated my profile on winebid. Bam, happened again with 10 days, and that was the ONLY place I had even used my card. I called winebid who said that they knew nothing of other compromises, so it probably wasn't them. I reluctantly accept that.

So a couple of weeks go by and I upload a third number there, and got the call last night. Happened again.

So my question here; has anyone else had issues with winebid and any compromised cc #'s? Or should I take off my tinfoil hat and look at other possibilities?

Thanks,
keytohwy

I would call winebid back and give them your story. There could be an employee over there doing this as well...

I tried, but I think it was basically a receptionist. Luckily they are local to me and when I'm there next, I'll pitch my story. But honestly, I expect them to shrug it off.

I was thinking if enough others on this forum had the same experience, it might give it more gravity.

Tell your cc company to sic 'em. They have a lot more clout than you do.

Have you made these orders over the phone or online? If online, maybe it's your computer that's been hacked.

Sorry to read your story, keytohwy. That Sucks.

I've purchased from Winebid several times. Never an incident even remotely similar to this (knock on wood).

Yeah, I think it's your computer that's compromised. I and so many fellow forumites use winebid regularly, that if they were compromised to the degree your problem suggests, we'd have heard about it.

I bet you have a keylogger trojan on your pc. Download spybot search and destroy (its safe) and do a full cleansing.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. Glad to hear you all aren't having similar issues.

As for keyloggers and my computer's security...I'm on a Mac. I have pretty tight security on this machine, and none of that really bad stuff seems to effect this platform.

I'll keep looking for other sources.

Thanks!

Yeah, Mac's security advantage has been more related to low market share than anything else. Same deal with alternative browsers like Firefox. The more common they are, the more likely they'll be specifically targeted - and especially if the evil doer is aware of a specific weakness (ie. a Mac using hacker).

As a Mac loving friend once told me, even virus writers don't support MacOS.

Economies of scale ...

If you were a worm writer and wanted to really spread it around ... do you go after the PC which has 90 percent of the market.. or the mac with 8% =)

Anyhow, it's a very dangerous assumption to think .. "Just because I use xxxx" my computer is secure.

May I suggest you edit the title of this thread to something somewhat less inflamatory? Seems unfair to Winebid unless or until you have proof...

I started to register with WineBid.com and when I got to the point where I have to register my CC, I baulked. Then I went searching and found this thread.

Is everyone OK with registering their CC with WineBid? Why can't they just do it like eBay? Anyone else chosen not to register because of this?

Less chance of nonpayment from someone who got a bit zealous with the bidding.
